Cancer: Colon Board Index

I am a 52 yr old woman in fairly good health. My doctor has recommended that I have a colonoscopy as a preventive health measure. It seems that this is quite an intrusive procedure if one has had no problems or symptoms. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations. I have a very bad gag reflex and don't think I can do the prep without vomiting. I also hear there are risks ie) they could preforate your colon?
I'm glad your doctor is recommending this test. It's the best way to find any potential problems in the colon. So many people skip tests because they don't have symptoms but with colon cancer this is a bad idea. Detecting early polyps can only be done with this test and they can be removed and tested during the procedure. You will be given a mild sedative so you won't have any discomfort. Most people feel quite well rested afterwards. I've had 4 scopes and each one was a piece of cake. Mind you my rectal cancer appeared only 4 years after my first scope so you also need to be aware of any changes in your bowel habits and go to your doctor if anything seems "off". The prep is not pleasant but tolerable. Question your doctor on the easiest method available.

YES, YES, YES...Please follow your drs advice and have the colonoscopy! The prep day is no picnic, but once that is over, the procedure is a snap. They sedated me and I don't remember a thing and afterwards I just went home and slept a couple of hours. They do have pills instead of the Fleet prep, but I read about it and the pills are supposed to be quite large and you take a LOT of them. If I had not had this procedure done when I did, it may have cost me my life. They found cancer. I had NO symptoms whatsoever. Good luck to you.
