Cancer: Colon Message Board

Cancer: Colon Board Index

My Dad died of rectal cancer a little more than a year ago. I am wondering about how often I need to be screened at this point. I had a routine (no problems) colonoscopy 4 years ago, and my PCP said every 5 now, but does that depend on the cancer? Are some types of cancers passed down in families and others not? Is there a way to get the specifics on the type of cancer from the oncologist, even after this much time has passed? Do the pathologists analyze all cancers for genetic changes? I'm frankly not really thrilled about having colonoscopies any more often than is really needed, but I sure don't want to get cancer.
