Cancer: Colon Message Board

Cancer: Colon Board Index

The width of the stool is not an indicator of whether someone has colon cancer or not. When the food we eat starts on its journey through the colon, in the ascending colon the contents are liquid, so a tumor unless it completely blocked the passageway would have no affect on stool width. In the transverse colon, as water is reabsorbed, the contents start to solidify and a large tumor there may affect stool size. In the last portion of the colon, the sigmoid colon, the contents have reached there usual size and stool shape prior to storage in the rectum. A much smaller tumor would cause a change in stool width since in the sigmoid colon, the contents are firmer.
