... Not sure what the chances are... I will say that sweat tests can show a false NEGATIVE, but I believe it's quite rare for there to be a false positive. My son had a normal 32 -- Borderline I believe is 40-60. Genetic testing is the only way to find out and an amplified test rather than just testing for the most common mutations. There are over 1500 identified CF genes. ... (3 replies)

... my 12 year old daugher has asthma, and at a routine allergy test the allergist found nasal polyps in her nose. ... cf was not given a name until 1949, until that it was lumped in with "consumtion" which covered just about every unknown illness so your family history would not see the name CF in any other generation than your parents.. I carry the recessive gene, my brother was the oldest living CF patient when he passed away at the age of 19 in 1966. a carrier can also have symptoms such... (5 replies)

... Hi there, goodluck in your quest for answers. Just to add the same as ratatoask, absolutely no family history of cf or lung etc issues in either family - so a complete shock at the time. our daughter was diagnosed at 14 months mainly because of recurrent chest/colds etc. she had a fairly constant wet and runny nose for months at a time. she was also constantly hungry - would... ... Oh and absolutely NO family history on either side. Both of us looked wayyyy back in geneology records and couldn't find anything relating cf -- early childhood deaths, lung issues.... (5 replies)
... You really wouldn't know for sure unless your child had genetic testing -- NOT just testing for the most common mutations. So I would push for either ambry amplified or quest as there are over 1500 CF mutations. Does your child have any digestive issues -- constipation and/or loose frequent stools. Reflux... DS' symptoms are mainly digestive and some sinus issues. DS'... (5 replies)

... 0-40 is considered normal, 40-60 borderline and 60-100+ is considered positive for CF. The problem is that while a high number is a definate for CF, it's doesn't necessarily mean that a lower number isn't CF. My child is a prime example -- he had a normal 32 at an accreditted CF facility, yet genetic blood testing revealed CF. There are over 1500 genetic mutations for cf... (9 replies)
... The sweat test sounds borderline to me, which means, I'd request genetic blood testing. DS has CF, which was diagnosed at birth because of a bowel obstruction. ... (1 replies)

... Hi, I'm a mother of a 3 year old with CF-- and I know how difficult this all is. First, could you explain the prenatal DNA test to me-- did they test you & your husband to see if you're both carriers??? If so, unfortunately that blood test does not test for all mutations of the CF gene. The only way invitro that the baby could be checked is through CVS, or an amnio.... (5 replies)
