Does constipation cause weight gain?
I will give you a big YES on that and here's why: If you're constipated, it's almost certain that you're not getting enough fiber in your diet from vegetables, legumes, whole grains and fruit and you're eating too much animal protein and baked goods made with white flour. And, as we know, vegetables, legumes and fruit are generally lower in calories than animal protein which is more concentrated.. Plus the fact that fiber gives you a feeling of fullness that helps you to know when the meal is over.

So, yes, if you're constipated you're not getting the balance that you need for good health and weight control.
Constipation doesn't actually CAUSE weight gain. I should have made that clear in my previous post. It's just a likelyhood that the same poor diet that causes constipation also causes weight gain.
I'm going to disagree with you, John, on your comment regarding that constipation is caused by a poor diet. There can be many reasons why a person is constipated...and it's not always because a person is eating a poor diet or not taking in enough fiber.

For example...Pain-killing opiates such as Vicodin, Oxycontin, Morphine...cause severe constipation in practically everyone that takes them.

Another example...a person might be eating a clean & healthy diet, taking in lots of fiber...BUT...not drinking enough water to flush that fiber through their system. You can eat fiber until you're blue in the face, but if you're not drinking enough water along with it, that fiber has nowhere to go...thus the constipation.

And finally...folks that suffer from IBS, deal with chronic constipation...often with intermittent bouts of diarrhea. Most people I know with IBS, monitor their diets closely so as not to trigger a flare-up.

Just felt the need to point out some situations that don't apply to your generalized comments on the causes of constipation.
Ahhhh so that is my problem. I have been constipated and am eating healthy. Ive been eating the beans and lots of fiber. I thought I was drinking enough but maybe Im not so Ill have to increase it. Thanks. I was begining to wonder. Cause they are all telling me to eat fiber eat fiber. I want to scream I am!!!! Now I'll drink more!

You made some very good points. When dealing with the science of health and nutrition, it seems there are always exceptions. It's not like some other sciences where there is often only one correct answer.

As far as water goes, it just didn't occur to me to mention it. But I wonder: If someone knows enough to eat a good diet, why wouldn't they know to drink enough water? I guess the lesson to be learned is that you can't take anything for granted.

As long as we are talking about exceptions, this might be another one: Sitting for long periods of time and not getting enough exercise. Did you ever take a long car trip and end up constipated? How about those who are confined to wheelchairs? Doesn't all of that sitting tend to cause constipation?
