Digestive Disorders Board Index

Five years ago, I was diagnosed with gastroparesis after an evaluation of my symptoms and an endoscopy. I started taking domperidone and felt fantastic for about two years. My appetite came back, I gained 20 pounds and my symptoms decreased significantly. I thought my problems were solved, but eventually, domperidone stopped working and my symptoms returned.

I made several appointments with my gastro when the debilitating nausea returned and he said I was just experiencing a bad flare, maybe as a result of stress. He drastically increased the amount of domperidone I was taking, but nothing worked. He gave me a blood test for celiac, but the results were negative. He thought I might have acid reflux, so he gave me a test packet of treatment - but the pills were huge (I have trouble swallowing large pills) so I didn't end up trying them. I decided to just deal with my symptoms and crossed my fingers they would go away.

Fast forward to this past winter, and my symptoms became worse than ever. I couldn't eat without experiencing severe abdominal pain and nausea. Eating anything, no matter what, would result in me running to the bathroom. It's hard to explain the pain. It's like a cinder block with sharp edges sitting right under my sternum in my stomach, and the nausea creeps up into the back of my throat and sits there for hours. My other symptoms, which have been constant through the years, include burping, severe bloating, and fatigue - but the pain and nausea are the most debilitating. I'm woken up several times by the pain at night, even when I haven't eaten for hours. I've lost 20 pounds in four months because I don't have an appetite (putting me at 5'6" and 93 pounds).

I saw a new doc in March who had me undergo a gastric emptying test to confirm gastroparesis. Turns out, my digestion was normal - so I'm not even sure if gastroparesis was my problem in the first place or if the test results weren't accurate (maybe my prior use of domperidone skewed it, although I stopped 4 days before the test). An abdominal ultrasound also showed normal results.

Last week, I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy to explore things further. They took a biopsy for celiac, which again, was normal. They also took a biopsy for h. pylori, which was also normal. Everything looked good in my colon. The only findings (which didn't seem to concern my doctor) were a small hiatal hernia in my esophagus and benign lymphoid hyperplasia in my small intestine (I still don't even really understand what this means). I've ended up with more questions than answers, and I have no idea where to go from here. I don't know if either of those things could be causing my symptoms or how to go about treating them.

At this point, I'm really worried because I'm losing so much weight and experiencing so much pain. My new doc told me that his next step would be putting me on antidepressants to try and increase my appetite. I'm open to that, but I'm more eager to find the root of the problem and make strides toward getting healthy again. That feels impossible right now without any answers. I'm exhausted from being so sick and not having an explanation or a way to feel better.

Have any of you experienced similar symptoms and found an explanation or diagnosis? Do you have recommendations for any other specialists I should see, or maybe some insight into my symptoms and possible underlying problems?
