Ear, Nose & Throat Board Index

I woke up on September 26th, 2006 with my neck glands swollen and hard. I went to the doctor’s on October 5th and got tested for mono and strep twice…which all came back negative. I had a CBC done and the white blood count was slightly elevated.
I have had constant fatigue ever since I’ve had these swollen and hard neck glands. No matter how much sleep I get I am always tired, if not exhausted. My neck glands periodically are more swollen at times and are always hard. My throat is NOT sore and I do not have a cough. I feel feverish all the time, like I will be having a hot flash (start sweating suddenly out of nowhere) and the next minute I will be having cold chills. I don’t have a fever though, the first course of antibiotics got rid of that. The doctor has given me two full courses of antibiotics in October. They put me on Prednisone for a week or so and it only brought down the swelling in my neck temporarily. I feel like crap everyday and it seems as the days go by, it’s getting worse. On November 10th I came down with what I believe was a sinus cold. I believe I caught it from my friends I hang out with on a daily basis because my immune system is weakened by the condition I have. I was blowing out greenish-yellowish mucus out of my nose for about a week. I took Mucinex and I believe the cold is over since I am not blowing out any colored mucus anymore but I still have some mucus caught in the back of my throat. When the doctor looked down my throat he said my tonsils and my neck glands are swollen. He said my lymph nodes are “golf ball size.” And he said I have pus packets in my throat on my glands and tonsils. The doctor said if it was tonsillitis, the antibiotics would have taken care of that. I got a second CBC done in November and it came back normal. They did a sedimentation test in November and it also came back normal. For the past couple of days, I have had chest pain on the left side, which lasts from 30 seconds to a minute, and it hurts when I take a deep breath only while having that chest pain. I have occasional dizziness and frequent headaches. I have trouble with my memory and I have been getting easily confused lately. For example, I don’t even remember if I had a fever when I first had my swollen neck glands back in September, but my mom says I did have a fever for the first week. I also have ringing in my ears and I had a severe nosebleed three days ago that lasted a good ten minutes, and I have never had nosebleeds. I had unexplained weight gain (ten pounds in 6 weeks). Now I have a loss of appetite and have lost ten pounds in 2 weeks. Today on Thanksgiving, I forced myself to eat and I had extremely painful gas and all the food I ate today went right through me, I had diarrhea. The last time I went to the doctor’s, he told me he thought it was a low grade bacterial infection(or viral, I don’t exactly remember) and it should go away in 6 to 8 weeks. I have already had it for over 8 weeks now. But I read online that you don’t have a viral or bacterial infection unless you have a fever. So I have no idea what I have and I don’t have any insurance so funds are very limited. Luckily I have my family to help me out. I am a 21 year old white female. Life is so difficult being sooo tired all of the time and feeling sick (malaise). Anyone have any ideas of what I could possibly have or should get tested for?

Sometimes, that condition is caused by peridontal disease. The dentist should have a good look at you to see if you have any infections at the roots of your teeth. I know that dentistry is even harder to come by than medical help. But most dental infection is not treatable by the same antibiotics that other things are. Also. it will cause the same symptoms as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, mono, or Cat Scratch fever.
