Your metabolism is also your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). There are a ton of webistes out there to figure out your BMR. You need your height/weight/age/sex, that sort of thing. Your BMR is the amount of calories you burn in 24 hours to maintain life. In other words if you slept for 24 hours that's how many calories you'd burn. Then any activities above and beyond simply being alive are additional calories you burn.

As for diet. What Naxis was saying, if I may be so bold, is that you need to have your diet in order. Not that you need to consider "going on" a diet. Diet is simply defined as what you eat. What you eat makes all the difference. How many carbs are you eating? What kind of carbs? How much protein? How much fat? Etc. You sound like you don't want to get that specific and that's OK. But you do need some basic diet information so you know what to eat, when to eat it and how that affects your body. Diet isn't a fad thing for people on this site. Diet is a way of life and it's about eating the right things for your body. It's not about not eating this or that for 3 months and then going back to how things were before. Your Biology teacher was right but don't look at diet as the fad thing that most people look at it as. Look at it as simply eating right and understanding how to eat right. This way you'll get into great shape and stay that way for life.
