HIIT won't really improve your endurance. It builds some muscle, but HIIT it training your body to go very hard for short periods of time. If you were training to be a sprinter, this would be good, but to increase endurance, it's not the best way to go. (Do some searching on fast twitch/slow twitch muscles if you want some more detailed info). Endurance is really just the result of practice. HIIT is good cardio once in a while in general and great for fat loss, but to shorten you mile time, you gotta keep running the mile. As your muscles adapt, it will become easier, so kicking intensity/speed up will just be a gradual process.
