I'm 5'4 and 117 pounds... i realize that i have a normal BMI but i would like to have a tighter stomach. I'm combining running and ab exercises but i was wondering how long it takes until your body starts burning the fat and not just the available calories. I run maybe an 8:30 mile so thats not bad i guess and im trying to get into shape for a half marathon. Also, if i run 6 days out of the week for over half an hour, how long will it take for me to see the results? If you see the women at the olympic trials and how tight their abs are... i want that. How long do i need to run and whats the most effective ab exercises that i can do to see results faster? Thanks!! :)
The best way to burn fat when running is by doing intervals. When you keep your heart rate down you're burning fat as opposed to working in the cardio training zone. To give you an idea, I usually run 4 or so miles 4 times a week and I will run for .8 and then jog or walk fast for .2 miles (for a total of 4 miles).

In terms of ab exercises, there are a lot of different exercises you can do, the most important thing is to do a variety of exercises, not the same ones every time. Your muscles will get used to doing certain exercises and then they won't be as effective. Your muscles also need rest so you should only be working your abs 2-3 per week.
