Hi cgon,

Yeah....seeing an eye doctor to check out the dark spot would definitely put your mind at ease. A simple dark spot is usually called a nevus and it is a benign growth. I have one too, but it's on the white part of my eyeball! What you want to pay attention to is the size and color as well as if it grows thicker or inflamed. If a nevus changes size, shape and color, it is usually not a good sign. Yes, it requires a special instrument called slit lamp to examine the nevus under high magnification, so your school health person will not be able to examine it properly. If you see your optometrist regularly (usually yearly) that is something that will be documented on your record for future reference.

So I would say don't worry it for the time being, it is probably just a harmless nevus since you are not having other issues. But it's good to have your eyes examined yearly anyways. Hope this helps!

Take good care. Cheers!
I discovered this forum while browsing the internet for answers, and I discovered this forum. For those of you that may ask, I'm almost 20 years old and have suffered from bad eyesight for years (if I recall correctly I have been wearing glasses since I was 7).

Anyways, in the past I've noticed that I have a dark spot on the iris of my right eye. I have light brown eyes, and the spot seems to be darker brown, so I just figured it was a darker pigment of melanin or something. However, today i was in the gym and I looked at it again, and for some reason I began to worry. From what I could tell, it hasn't gotten bigger (although I never really registered the size of it before, so this point is moot), and I'm not experiencing any other issues with my with eyesight.

I know the obvious answer is to get my eyes professionally checked out, but I'm away at school and won't be heading back home for a few months. I don't have a ton of money right now, and would prefer to save it until I get back home unless absolutely necessary. I'm not sure the health personal at my school would be qualified to examine my eyes in such a way either.
