I've had this problem on and off for about 3 years now. I thought at first it was computer strain and that I needed a stronger eye glass perscription. My eyes have been checked out... no problems, and I've also been to an allergist.....and I'm OK there too. I don't have a stuffy nose or chronic sinus infections or colds.
I always wake up in the morning with the problem. It's happend in both eyes but never simutaneously. My eye hurts and is very red only in the outer portion of the eye. There is no inflammation or drainage. It just hurts when I move my eye around. After awhile I get very fatiqued, and start to get a headache. I've been given several different drops to help ease the pain but nothing to solve the problem. It usually goes away within 4 days. I've been given antibiotics for a possible sinus infection...all seem to help for awhile but it always comes back. I have switched out all of my makeup and most of the time do not wear it. This week I suffered from the left eye being red, and yesterday woke up with the right eye. This if the first time it's been both. Back to my internist yesterday. I got the Z pack and more eye drops for 200.00! Please help if you can!

Hmmm. I'm JUST guessing but since nobody answered thought it was better than nothing. It could be you sleep with your eyes slightly open and that area gets dried out. You could try taping your lids shut and using an ointment (refresh lacrilube, genteal gel, both OTC) at night and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help, google "recurrent corneal erosions" and see if the symptoms fit. they don't sound like they all do, but it's just an idea. It's an annoying but not harmful condition that can be fixed. You basically have a portion of your lid "stick" to the cornea and rip off a little bit when you open it in the morning - but by the time you would see a doctor it would be totally healed up, because the cornea is so fantastic about repairing itself. That's my understanding from what I've read.

Maybe ask your question on the dry eye forum - they deal with all other sorts of issues too, not just dry eye, and it gets a LOT of people and answers.

Good luck, I have had red eyes for years from allergies and dry eyes and it's no fun.
