Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I am 13 weeks out from PTTD surgery with flat-foot reconstruction.

I am in the midst of transitioning to a sneaker with an ankle stirrup brace.

I am walking, but the pain is pretty bad. I just signed on for my second 12 visits of PT.

I have had flat feet all my life, and bilateral bunions that give me pain. I chickened out of bunion surgery in my 20s.

Would I do it again, you ask? Well, it is too early to tell if I am going to be better off, but the thing that drove me to my decision was that at age 50, my joints and health are in good enough shape to allow for good healing and the most options. A torn tendon isn't going to fix itself, and my joints are only going to get arthritic.

I was having pain, but not 24/7. I did quit dancing (which I love) last June, so my pain and fear of doing more damage affected my life.

It is not easy. But I am optimistic that I will return to dancing and some reasonable exercise. I gave up "cute shoes" a long time ago, but I am also optimistic that I will be able to wear "stylish, but I don't look like my 84-year-old mom" shoes.

I am not ready to compromise *that* much on my life that I would go on for a long period of time, and possibly miss my "young and healthy" window for having surgery. I'm sure I will look back (hopefully positively) on these words that I am writing...I still have another foot that hurts and has similar pathology!
