Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

Hi guys. I'm a 33 yr old type 1 diabetic who sadly fractured my heel on this past Dec 31 (happy new year to me). Long story short. My fracture required surgery and 9 screws and a plate later I am here at 12 weeks post surgery. According to my dr I have healed very nicely and have been doing very well. I got upgraded to a boot about 2 weeks ago and have gotten clearance to walk with the boot on or with sneakers and one crutch. At first, walking with the boot was glorious and felt great but lately my foot is so swollen that it looks like I shoved a baseball inside and has gotten very painful. My heel does not hurt at all but on both sides of my foot at around the ankle level it hurts alot and limits me from walking. Now I was told by my dr that swelling is normal and expected but how much swelling is too much?? I have relatively thin legs so my foot looks like a damn sausage and can absolutely not fit into any shoes. I have a drs alot in a week but am just so worried that something is wrong, mostly from being paranoid. If anyone has gone through this stage, please offer some guidance as this is all very new for me. Thanks for reading!
