Re: Subtalar Fusion
Aug 13, 2008
Hi rhcollins33 ;) ,

I had Left Ankle Subtalar Fusion on April 28,2006. I have RA. I was in a cast / wa;king cast for 6 months. I must stress if you have the surgery to be prepared for the pain you may experience right after. Make certain you have pain meds!!!
It is now August 2008, and I am still having problems. I am having a lot of swelling. I can just about do a normal shopping trip!!

I saw the orthopedic doctor yesturday and he advised the RA in my ankle is bad,. he thinks I now will have to have total ankle replacement surgery.

You really need to read all about the surgery - good and bad stories. If you need a list of questions to ask the doctor let me know!! I can also give you some more tips if you decide to go for the surgery!!

best of luck!! Always remember every situation is different. What may happen to one may not happen to another!!

Stay Strong!!!! :)

I meet with the first of three orthopedists today. Please tell me why you needed this in the first place--just curious. Again, I'll need to be convinced whether I'll be trading one kind of pain for another, maybe another worse one. I already have had an ankle fusion, don't limp, can wear almost any
shoe I want, have intermittent pain and problems, so I don't khow whether
they'll even recommend this subtalar fusion at this time. The DPM suggested it, and now begins the inquiries of the orthopedists. I have plenty of
pain meds. I've had many surgeries over my lifetime of 66 years.
Thanks again.
