Hi Debbie...........
Another fusion buddy here! Ditto on Sophie's and Sharon's posts....we all had fusion surgeries about the same time last year. I have had 3 surgeries on that toe in under one year. I had a Keller procedure for my arthritis in 11/05 which didn't work and then that toe was fused with donor graft, plate and screws in 5/06 and then 10/06 I had the tip of the big toe moved over because the angle was too severe and it sat partially on top of my second toe. Now, with that all said.....I had been non weightbearing for 7 of the 13 months and camboot the rest of the time. I have been able to set the camboot aside for the last 3 weeks now. I am 3 1/2 months post op now and find that because my toe is fixed from tip to base that shoe wearing is a little tricky. If I wear a shoe that hugs the top of my toe too much it rubs the screw and plate some and irritates the skin. I still have a bit of swelling but with 3 surgeries in under a year I heard that it can take 6-12 months for the swelling to be over. I was never told that I need to have the plate removed but I feel better having it in because it stablizes the joint. Non-union is a very big issue because that is the toe that does the work. It is so easy to get discouraged but foot surgery seems to take some time to heal. Patience is the key but oh so hard!!!!!! We are here for support!

And also to Lizzy......great to here that you can wear heels!
