Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I didn't actually shatter my calcaneus, but broke it in 3 places after falling 25 feet off a ladder on August 31st, 2008. I had surgery September 7th and had 3 screws inserted. Was in a traditional cast for 3 weeks then had the staples removed and was given a air cast/walking boot, but I am not allowed to put any weight on it at all. What my orthopedic surgeon does have me doing though is taking the boot off 5 times a day with my foot propped up and doing exercises to restrengthen my ankle and foot muscles. I have to curl my toes down and trace the letters of the alphabet in the air. I couldn't believe in a little over a month how much my muscles went to sleep and lost flexibility. I couldn't curl my toes even at first. It's been two weeks now with the air cast and I have much more movement. I do it every day until the muscles hurt to make sure I'm ready when the doc says I can start putting weight on it again. My incision is heeling very well, just a little bit of scabbing yet. This is all I can do until November 12th when I go back to the doctor to start the next step of walking on it again. Obviously I'm looking forward to that, but I am surprised at how many people are in so much pain months later. I guess I'm just an optimist but I'm not anticipating any problems other than usual pain until the healing is complete. I do have swelling yet, but not too bad. I think one thing that helped so far is that I did a good deal of research choosing a doctor after the initial emergency room visit. I have an orthopedic surgeon who is strictly a foot and ankle specialist. She is board certified and seems extremely competent. The day she did my surgery she had two other calcaneus fractures the same day. Her high level of experience has been a comfort to me. Knowing how important the heel bone is, I would recommend you do your homework choosing an orthopedic specialist. Hope this helps, I just joined today and plan on keeping track here of others who are recovering from a broken heel.
