Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I just wanted to write an encouraging post about this procedure. I am doing pretty well and in a tennis shoe as of today. My foot still swells some on bottom and around the toes. The Dr. told me it's one of the best bone fusions he has ever seen.
BUT the first four weeks or so of this procedure is ROUGH!!
The first week I was in a cast, and my block did not work so I was in pain, and pain meds didn't have a huge effect on me. The second week I was put into a foot, but no weight bearing for four weeks. The knee roller was a life saver. After four weeks, I was allowed to walk in the boot for two weeks, then a surgical shoe for two weeks. I did wear a tennis shoe some to see how it felt. I had a pair that was a half shoe too big, which was perfect! He said I could start walking today, so we went for about a 1/4 mile walk which was enough. My ankle is still weak, and my foot was a little sore. He said let pain guide. I am so ready to be "normal" again.Reading these posts can be depressing sometimes! And truly this procedure is depressing at times. Non-weight bearing is so overwhelming. I will have the right foot done, but I think I am going to give myself a year. Not having the bunion pain, and mid-foot pain will be worth this surgery! I can see the light each day! Hope this helps anyone who is getting ready to have this surgery. I'd be glad to answer any questions! Good luck to anyone having it soon!
