In August2003 I had a head cold and towards the end of the cold my right ear filled with fluid.. In October I went to an ENT who popped my ear with a knife and vacumed it clear, the healing process took about 3 weeks. By the fifth week the ear filled back up with fluid and I was back in misery. I tried sudafed, at the request of the doctor and tried taking the crap for weeks with no change...
I gave up in december and figured that the lack of hearing and tinitus was just they way it was for the rest of my life. Jan 1st I received another headcold/sinus problem, not to bad but enough to make my nose drip like a faucet... I ran out of sudafed at work so I went to the circle k next door, they only had Dayquil caplets. I popped 2 caplets about 11:00AM and was higher than a kite all day, sudafed doesn't do that to me. I woke up the next day and my ears had dried up, I am on a week now and can hear and have zero ear disconfort or pressure, my tinitus has stopped for the most part and my tmj is gone as well.
My only guess is that I had some kind of blockage in the etube that the cold and Dayquil loosened up enough to clear.
From what I read here it seems that people with TMJ seem to have similar issues with ETD and along with that comes Tinitus...
The alternative was going back and having my ear tubes put in..
Try the Dayquil it may help....
Hi, I have had what i believe to be ETD for the past two and a quarter years. After symptoms of crackling and popping in my ears (both, one usually pops just before the other) for around 2 weeks i decided to see my GP. The doctor said that it was just one of those things that occurred for usually a short space of time after a severe head cold.

However, over two years later, exactly the same symptoms were still occurring. My ears pop and crackle every time I yawn and swallow (IT IS SO ANNOYING). I went back to the doctor (a different one this time) and was told to do the following:

1) Elevate head whilst in bed

2) Avoid dairy products and to drink lots of water

3) Inhale steam with Eucalyptus oil

This has worked marginally at times but I am still constantly annoyed and uncomforted by my ears crackling and popping all the time! I am going to taking dayquill and see if it works (do they stock in in the UK?).

Does anyone have any other suggestions, I am only 18 and fear that it is going to be like this for the rest of my life!!!
