Hearing Disorders Message Board

Hearing Disorders Board Index

I am so amazed at the wonderful people on this board who came back to reply over a year later that I had to create an account and share my story. First off, thank you so much for everything on her so far.

Mine stared about 4 months ago or so with a weird sick feeling one day in my stomach followed by some chest congestion. Then a day later I got up and my ear was popping. I went to the clinic and she said it was probably just a sinus infection or pressure and prescribed sudafed and nasal spray. I took that and the popping didn't go away but I developed chest pains and heart fluttering so I stopped taking the sudafed immediately. So she then put me on a ear drop antibiotic. Within the first use the popping stopped but the same day a slight ringing started. After 10 days of use it seemed better but the ringing was there. She checked my ears again, told me to let it work for another week then come back. One day while sitting at my desk the ringing was so bad (plus it was new) I had to go back. She checked my ears again and decided I should see an ENT.

So I went to the ENT and he checked me out and said everything looked great. Good news, really, but it didn't help the ringing. I had also started having pain in my neck and when I moved my head the ringing got louder. He was only concerned that the ringing was only in one hear. We had hearing tests done and he told me to come back in a week or so. So I came back. No hearing loss, still ringing, still pain in my neck (felt like a stiff neck). He said I could have an MRI done to check for acoustic neuroma but he said if it were his ears and his money, he would wait. I didn't have any major dizziness or vertigo. He scheduled another appointment for 3 months later and wanted to retest. He said if I had ANY hearing loss to come back immediately.

I have about a month and a half until I go back. The pain in my neck comes and goes and the ringing is still there. I'll admit I'm a bit of a hypochondriac and the thought of something really bad causing the pain and ringing scares me. To the point that I worry about it. A lot. I really wonder if the neck pain is actually from stress and/or staying up too late.

Some days I am fine and I don't notice the ringing. But some days, like today, it's really loud and depresses me. The pain in my neck was better today after changing some sleeping positions but it still gets louder when I turn my head. Hopefully there won't be any hearing loss when I go back. I agree the best thing is to turn on some music and just live life but sometimes it is very hard. I might fork out the money and opt for the MRI.

It wasn't until tonight that I put together the ear drops and the ringing and I do wonder if they caused it. And it makes me think that after 4 months it may be permanent. Thanks for listening. If anyone still checks this board I look forward to hearing your story and updates.
