Ashton2011,
The suggestion made by your doctor to using a decongestant before flying could be indicative of your personal circumstances either pathomorphology or history of chronic sinus infection etc.

Nonetheless I suppose it can't hurt. I will definitely remember this for the times I have cold like symptoms and have to use air travel.

It was on a printed page giving different instructions for after discharge, not personal.
It goes on to say you can use this same treatment when travling by car in a mountainous region. Do this whenever you fly in the future.

I traveled two days after each stapedectomy 450 miles, some in mountains up to 3500 ft. Pressurerazation (sp?) in aircraft is somewhere around 8,000 ft I believe. I did not have any problems either time through the mountains using the instructions.
