PAC Ablation?
May 29, 2016
I am looking for advice for my PAC (premature atrial contractions) situation. I am 26 years old and about a year and a half ago they came on abruptly one day out of no where. My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. Had an echo, and tons of lab work and all was normal. A 24 hour Holter monitor showed a ~15% burden of PACs and a few PVCs as well. Metoprolol helped but my blood pressure couldn't tolerate even the smallest dose. Calcium channel blocker didn't help. Finally I was started on flecainide which completely takes care of the PACs. I've come off of it a couple times over the past year to see if I am still having bad PACs and they are still there. Often they occur every other to every third beat. I cannot tolerate them without medication. I cannot sleep with them or focus at work.

My husband and I want to try for pregnancy and I am not sure what to do. I do not feel comfortable taking flecainide during pregnancy as it has not been studied enough to be deemed safe to take during pregnancy. My EP doctor has told me I'd be a candidate for an ablation but to "think long and hard before choosing to have one". I understand the risks of an ablation. I have not, however, been able to find much discussion about an ablation for PACs. Mostly people say it should only be performed for more dangerous arrhythmias. Does anyone have any thoughts on my situation? I know I am not in danger but I'm curious if anyone else has had an ablation for PACs only or had a similar situation as mine.
