NY Mom,
When I read questions like yours I like to give my story. I do not want to steer anyone away as I am very pro treatment.,and what happened to me is not typical but can happen.

My first round of tx was Pegintron/rebitrol combo for 48 weeks. The first 3 months on this was h*** I was sleeping 12-16 hours a day and when I was awake I hurt all over ,especially my bones, I felt sick to my stomach all the time and was mentally exhausted ( I was put on an antidepressant 2 months before starting treatments) After the first 3 months I was able to get up and around a little but was only able to go to work 2-3 days a week for about 6 hours a day (thak goodness I had a wonderful boss and job that was so accomodating) I would take my shots on Friday night and not be able to get out of bed till Sunday for the whole time I was on those meds.

I found out that I had relapsed after only 2 months and decided that I wold try treatment again . I wanted to start right away while my body was still used to the meds, but since I had moved to Nashville from Michigan I would have to find a new doctor here. To make a long story short, after getting treated like something lower than dirt by these doctors I went back to Michigan and my doctor there agreed to treat me long distance.

I have recently finished my second round of treatment - Pegasys/ Copegus combo for 72 weeks . After becoming anemic about a third of the way through I was started on Procrit (1 shot a week) and Neupogen (2 shots a week) I also had to do 1-2 shots of Imitrex a month for migraines. For a total of 4- 5 shots a week for over a year, not to mention the pills, 5 copegus a day , antidepressants and vicodin for pain (6-8 a week) About half way through I started experiencing severe pains in my stomach area, extreme fatigue, unexplained weight gain. I begged my doctor to do a THS and my count was 24.67 I was started on synthroid and will have to be on it the rest of my life now (hypothroidism) Towards the end of my 72 weeks I went to the dentists for a regular check up and cleaning (I go every 6 months) anyhow he asked me what meds I was on? Why ? Because in the 6 months since my last check up I had lost 2mm of bone mass in my jaw bone. I am going in this week to have my upper teeth pulled (there is nothing wrong with them Physically but they are becoming lose and wil fall out because of this bone loss. (caused by hep c, antidepressants, hypothyroidsm and the interferon that I have been on for over 3 years) I also have to go in April and have a sleep apnea test done, and an EMG to see if I am a good candidate for carpal tunnel surgery (also caused by hypothyroidism)

I had a PCR done after only 2 months and it came back negative, I will have another done in April (my 5th month post) Like I said I am not the norm here but these things can happen and everyone should be aware (by the way I am 1a, no signs of damage of the liver and starting viral count was 1,800,000)

Some days I wish I never had been told that I had Hep C with all the sides and after effects but then I think of my son and my new grandbaby and know that I wouldn't have been able to live with myself had I unintentionally given this disease to them.

Each person is different and needs to weigh the pro and cons for themselves but everyone of us is responsible for making sure that we take the necessary precautions from spreading this disease futher.
