End stage liver disease is not necessarily the same as liver failure. However, it is beyond the time when treatment of anything less than aggressive strategies are necessary. It is appropriate at that point to be discussing or be referred for transplant.

Ascites does not occur in someone without progressing cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is still manageable. I have never heard of anyonwe having ascites at a stage one biopsy or even up to stage three or four. That would be rare indeed and likely would have some kind of mitigating factor associated with it.

I offer this only for purposes of clarification. Bloating is not end stage disease, nor is it ascites.
