Knee & Hip Problems Message Board

Knee & Hip Problems Board Index

I am a 38 year old male, 5'10", 215 pounds, medium build, moderately overweight.

For about the past year, I would get occasional stiffness in my right knee after doing a long run more than 3 miles or a walk more than 6 miles. The problem was so mild at first, I just attributed it to being out of shape and getting older.

Within the past 3 months, the stiffness after long runs, long walks, and even walking into a grocery store from the parking lot would bring the stiffness on big time. Even standing on it much longer than 5 minutes.
What happens is it became very difficult to flex the knee, between the point where it is 1/3 and 2/3 fully flexed. So sitting and standing after this soreness and aching comes on became a real chore initially, but the strange thing is once the knee is bent to a 90 degree angle or more or flexed repeatedly, the soreness and irritation decreases significantly or stops. The soreness/stiffness completely goes away usually after 2 hours of resting or eliminating any walking longer than 5 minutes.

There is never any extreme inflammation on redness or complete loss of motion, only stiffness and soreness. I have cut out running completely for more than a month, I have ramped up walking again, the soreness returns if I walk much more than 3 miles.

I don't need any lectures on running with my age, height, and weight, I know the risks and until recently I had almost no problems.

The knee soreness/stiffness is focused on the back of the knee dead center for the most part, during a bad episode it will occasionally radiate toward the front of the knee and sides, but never any inflammation.

Before the knee I had and still have similar issues with both of my big toes and thumb knuckles, it is almost like what people describe as gout except I don't get the inflammation.

I did break one of my far right tarsals in the right foot 2 years ago by spraining the ankle, but I didn't displace the fracture, not much pain after healing and I ran for over a year with no pain.

I have also had a "clicking" right hip socket since the age of 20, that was never more than an annoyance, now that has become very stiff occasionally, either on its own or in conjunction with the knee. I haven't seen a doctor for any of this yet, and am hoping it is not the early stages of some form of arthritis.

Some people think I have a tendon or ligament injury by the soreness I decribe when I flex the knee, but never had any bruising.

If I go to a doctor where do I start? Any ideas on what might be wrong?
