Knee & Hip Problems Board Index

I had been running 5 miles 3 times a week on hilly pavement for about two months when one day I experienced an intolerable, sharp pain on the outside of my right knee. I went to see a doctor and was diagnosed with chronic retropatellar (knee) tendonitis. I asked for a referral to physical therapy, and my therapist rediagnosed me as having "Runner's Knee" (Chondromalacia patellae, or Patella-Femoral Syndrome if in its early stages--I'm not sure which one I am). I think he's right, since my online research matches the symptoms up perfectly.

I read that with good treatment, full recovery can be expected in 4-6 weeks. However, I first noticed this problem in October of 2005. It is now May of 2006, and even though I haven't treated it at all between then, this problem has disabled me from running for more than 10 minutes for that entire span of time. I am trying to ship out for the US Marines Basic Combat Training on August 13th, and they don't want anybody who has problems like mine, so it is imperative that I am rid of this by then, and for good (God knows if you have any residual injury it's going to come out during those 13 weeks of pain... and then 5 more weeks of Infantry School). For treatment right now I have physical therapy, where I do a lot of IT Band stretching and exercises. I also stretch it at home and take anti-inflammatory medicine.

My questions are:

1) Is it realistic to expect that I can overcome Runner's Knee in the ~12 weeks until boot camp?
2) Is it realistic to expect that I can overcome Runner's Knee with my ~12 weeks well enough to be able to withstand 13 (+5) weeks of extreme stress?
3) Will I be able to run on this knee in the months leading up to August, in between treatment (I have to be in shape for Basic)?
4) What advice do any of you have for taking care of this?

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.
