i deleted have been having knee problems for the past 2 years.. my knees crack constantly and i have pain when running. or walking up stairs.. they also give out when i run and i fall.. i have put on 20lbs in the past 2 years because i cant do physical work or i have knee pain.. whats the cause of all this? is there anything i can do to fix it? or should i see a doctor?
It sounds like you should see a Dr.
i really hate doctors and i really dont want to see one.. last year my knee swole up.. and my dads a doctor so i asked him. and he said its cause of my weight.. but im not that overweight.. only about 20lbs
I hate Drs. too, but sometimes you need to see one anyway. What type of Dr. is your Dad?
my dad is a DO. they do everything. surgery.. ER that kind of stuff
so he "should" know what hes talking about lol :)
does anyone else have any advice?
I'm having the same problems as you in both of my knees. I am 30 years old and I don't know if I'm overweight or not. I think I am. I'm 5'2 and I weigh 118 pounds. Anyway, my knees crack too and hurt constantly. Stairs are the worst and I wouldn't even attempt running. I had x-rays done and it showed Osteopenia in both of my knees. My doctor said Osteopenia is the beginning stages of Osteoporosis. The only advice they gave me was to take more calcium. I can't get back the bone density I've already lost, but I can hopefully slow it down. The problem is that Osteopenia isn't supposed to cause pain. I have an appt. with an Orthopedic doctor next week. I'll let you know what I find out. I know you hate doctors but I really think you should see one. Maybe they will find out what is causing your pain. I don't think it's your weight since you said you only gained the weight because you weren't as active since your knees started hurting. Please see a doctor and let me know what you find out hon. Good luck. :)
thanks for the advice.. if they start getting bad again ill go. i am 5"2 and 130lbs.. trust me.. u are not overweight.. they normally get bad in the summer. cause thats when i start doing the most activity.. i'll start taking more calcium and see if that helps.. thanks..
The best thing for you to do is see an Orthopeadic surgeon who specializes in knees, I really don't agree with your dad even though he is a doctor.
Cracking sounds in a knee and pain is not normal. It is often a sign of damaged cartilage or ligaments or in the worst case scenario bone on bone contact. You need to have appropriate X-rays done to determine if there's any bone or cartilge damage. An MRI can generally tell if there's problems with ligaments, tendons and muscles and can also show cartilage rips or tears.

You are not obese and your weight most likely has nothing to do with the knee problem. If you were 100 lbs overweight then yes that may be a factor, but 10 or 20 lbs is NOT going to cause knee problems.

In addition to the calcium 1200 mg of Vitamin C has also proven to be benifical in slowing down the degeneration process caused by OA. I know that when I take it faithfully it does help to ease up the pain some.
