Soar/Aching Knees
Jun 19, 2006
I have had this problem since like middle school (I'm 18 now), on and off though. But I'm finally getting off my lazy *** and seeing a doctor. Could being out of shape and overweight attribute to this problem. If so, I started working out over a month ago, and have lost 12 pounds. Will the aches go away eventually? I also have lower back pains once in a while too. I was thinking that my flat feet can attribute to these problems maybe. I'm going to the doctors this week, should I expect the worst?
man i have the same exact problem and i am 15 and underweight. i do skateboard all the time though and i am really flat footed. i heard that being flat footed can cause knee pain. my knee pain is on the outside of both of my knees mostly.
My son had flat feet at age 14 and the doctor had him to wear corrective shoes, that is sport shoes with a custom made fiberglass molded and sewn into the shoes.

Sport shoes now have good arch supports and there usually is no need to have special correction made in shoes.

I have plantar fascitis in both feet now and found that New Balance walking shoes (one style) works well for me with a Dr. Scholl's Gel heel/arch pad inserted. You will need to try on many shoes before finding the one that fits like a glove and supports the arch well.

The orthopedic surgeon told my son to choose a profession that he did not have to stand on his feet. This is a good idea for anyone with flat feet. The surgeon also told him to never allow anyone to do surgery on his feet, it would have to be the last resort, too many nerves in the feet.

Getting the right shoes will help to realign your weight and take the stress off of your knees. I took my son to the doctor with knee pain and learned it was his feet causing the problem. If overweight, lose weight.

Hi James

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your knees and feet - if you have genuinely very flat feet there is a strong chance that is what is causing our knee pain. Basically your feet are not functioning as efficiently as a normal foot and may be putting strain on your knees.

First: there is not necessarily anything to worry about: clearly flat feet are regarded as inelegant - and often those who have not been landed with flat feet make jokes about guys like us (I was told by my physio I had the worst flat feet he had ever seen when I was about our age) but if you get the correct support, especially at a young age, you should be able to stave off further problems although you are unlikley ever to develop strong arches.

Basicaly, you should get a bio-mechanical assesment of yor feet and how you walk/run by a qualified sports podiatrist. By your description, you will almost certainly need orthotic inserts for all your shoes (btw, if you are a kid that wears skate trainers all the time they are about the worst for flat feet as they are wide and have no support!)

All the best

Dan
