Knee Fusion
Apr 26, 2007
I am a 40 year old female living in the uk. I had a knee fusion 3 years ago after wearing full length splint on my leg for about 14 years I am pleased with the result of the fusion because I do not have to wear the splints but am still getting alot of pain and finding it difficult to weightbear without crutches has anyone else experianced this after fusion and did it improve? Also I would like advice on air travel with a stiff leg as I have not been abroad for many years and wondered how easy it is to travel I have a wheelchair to get to the aeroplane I do drive an automatic car with my left leg my right leg was fused:) I believe I am more independant after the fusion and that the operation was worth it even though I still have problems.Thankyou

Hi!
Pleased to hear you are doing fine! Ive never regreted this step as well and Im also happy with the outcome of fusion surgery. After so many years with a splint, was there no chance to have the leg fused naturally just by continuing with thorough splint fixation? Maybe surgery just was the quicker way ;-) It takes some time to adapt to the straight leg, but if one can get rid of severe pain and cumbersome aids like braces, this makes it really worth it!

Hugs

my leg has been fused for 21 years. Now I am looking into having my leg amputated or an artificial knee put in if possible, I am 46 yrs. old and have spent many years falling, tripping and breaking bones, such as wrists, ribs, some teeth. I trully hope your fusion works out for for you, but mine no longer works for me. Over 21 years I have shrunk on my left side 4 inches, whitch has cause alot of damage to my spine, hips, and pelvis. Right now I have had my right hip joint put in, then when that heels, we'll decide on the the left leg, then when that heels, they will replace my left hip. So I'm looking at 2 years of 3 major surgeries, alot of therapy, pain, and hoping it will all work out as planned. So I trully wish youall the best with your fusion, and that with time, you won't run into the same problems that I have run into.

I was just reading about the knee fusions some of you have had and its wonderful that they have worked out so well. As for me that hasn't happen. After 2 failed knee replacements I had no choice but to get my leg fused and its been along hard road for me. I had mine done in 2002 and problems ever since. Swelling all the time plus my leg shorter than the other one and painful very painful. I to was looking to have my leg amputated but now drs say it wouldn't do me any good because I have RSD in the whole leg. I have been wanting to have this rod out of my leg for the past 5 years but not one dr would do it they say it can't be done. Now I am fighting for my disability, its been so hard and very difficult for me sometimes I feel like I am just living a nightmare and I will soon wake up. Thanks for listening just wanted to vent alittle. God Bless to all of you and hope you are having a pain free day.
