Cracking hurting knees

My knees started to hurt badly and my left one seems to lock up with pain and both of my knees crack. i was walking 3 miles per day 4 days a week, have not walked in a month. I take motrin every day for the pain. It seems to have gotten a tiny bit better but what could be causing this and is there anything I can do myself?
