Knee & Hip Problems Board Index

I'm 28 years old, and about a year ago I fell 20 feet and have been having problems with my knee ever since. My knee will pop out and than back in or it will just shift and when does pop out it is very painful. I had an mri done and they didnt find anything wrong. About a month ago now I had orthroscopic surgery and they found a tear in the cartilage and managed to shave it. other than that, the surgeon said all theligament looked fine. My knee hasnt popped out since but did shift which usually seems to be the step to popping out. I was taking it pretty easy too. so I'm confused........Surgeon says everything looks good but it's still shifting.... and if its shifting i'm sure its only a matter of time before it starts popping out again. I gotta talk to my surgeon about it yet but wondering if anyone has any idea about what the hell is wrong with this friggin thing
Having torn lots of cartilage in my day, I know what you mean about it seeming to pop out of alignment. When the meniscus is torn, it's like parking a car on a couple of rocks. You go to move and the car shift back or forward to get traction. Now that it's been smoothed out and you've been relaxing and letting it heal, it's time to get the muscles as strong as possible to keep the knee in line. Your muscles will keep the joint stable, not resting it. The more you rest it, the more stress you put on the joint to do all the work and you're liable to re-tear the cartilage.. Strengthen the muscles and let them do all the work and you'll find a big difference.

Ask your doc about getting some physical therapy to learn how to strengthen the muscles properly without doing further joint damage. It really does help. I now have plastic and metal knees(after 12 surgeries) and I have to exercise even more to keep my knees from wearing out too fast. Those muscles are key!

good luck..........Jenny
