Knee & Hip Problems Message Board

Knee & Hip Problems Board Index

My 10 year old son has developed a hip joint complaint that causes him severe and continual pain. It started last May after some light physical exercise. He could not walk unaided, could not attend school and did not sleep well. He had a full battery of tests - ultrasound scan, x-ray, MRI, full body bone scan together with full blood tests. All came up negative. It is not Perthes or 'irritable hip'. Nobody seems to know what it is. After 8 weeks and out of the blue we heard a 'click' from his hip and almost instantaneously he was ok - ran around the garden and did star jumps. No - not a dislocation because surely that would show up on the many scans. We never found out what it was.

It came back last week and he is still in a great deal of pain. From being a happy and optimistic boy, he has become depressed and cynical.

The medical profession can not or will not do anything about it other than tell us they do not know what it is. They do no take seem to take his pain seriously. Making him suffer in pain in between two weekly appointments is not taking it seriously in my opinion.

So I am looking for advice or ideas from a much wider audience (you!) to help relieve my son from his agony. I am open to weird, wonderful or mainstream ideas and theories.

Thank you for reading this.
Hi ya i have a 9 year old boy who is suffering the same as your little boy, he started 5 weeks ago with pain in hsi hip really bad pain they sent him to hospital, they did blood x ray which came back clear, he had ultra sound which came back with fluid around his hip, they said it was irratable hip sent him home 2 dats later with pain relief and said to see how he goes, he still couldnt walk properly and 2 weeks later was back in hospital this time for a week, they did more tests and this time did mri scan to see if there was any soft tissue damage and to check for cnacer etc, all came back clear, they then said it could be his knee, which was just stupid, then he saw a physio who said she thought it was growing pains i laughed i said you are kidding me. then the same day saw the consultant who said it might be arthritas, they said if it carried on they would do bloods to find out. sent him home 2 days later on paracetomol adult dose ibuprofen and codiene. they told me to slowly take him off the strong tablets, when i did the pain was back up to the worst level again so back to docs who put him straight back up to high dose again, but they say they dont know what it is and think they never will find out even said it could be in his head, cruel as they dont see him how bad he is. its like no one cares or even is bothered to help him to get this sorted.
