Knee fusion
Jan 28, 2012
Hi, Im new to this, but was wondering if anyone has had a knee fusion and what are your opinions. I had one done in September of this year, and have questions.
thanks, mom555

Many years ago people had knee fusions because of intractable pain. I just presumed wrongly it seems that everyone had a knee replacement now. Was there a reason you had the fusion?

Re: Knee fusion
Jan 29, 2012
Hi, I had mine fused because after my second revisement, I ended up getting a strep infection. They opened me up and washed everything out, and put me on a pic line. After 5 months, I still had the infection, so they went in and removed the replacement, and the dr. didnt put in a spacer, his choice, and finally when the infection was gone, 3 months later, and another pic line inserted, the dr. didnt want to put in a new knee for me because he doent do nickel free replacements. He knew this in Oct and didnt refer me elsewhere. So, I had to find a new dr. to fix this mess. In the meantime, Im in a straight leg brace and no spacer, which lasted for 5 months. It was awful. By the time I finally found a new dr. months had passed and all the ligaments and tendons had shrunk, so there was no chance to have a new knee put in. My options were a fused leg or amputation. I had it fused, which is not a good choice no matter how you look at it. It has been a life changing experience. I was told that I would be in no more pain after this. This is not true, since I have more pain now than before. I have to drive with hand controls, and my leg resting in the passanger seat. I have to use a walker, because now my right leg is 2 inches shorter than my other. Which in itself is a pain, because with my left knee being replaced, my left knee is suffering because of the constant overcompinsation from the right. Needless to say hip pain, back pain, and shoulder and just plain frustrating. I have to go back in March again, as the dr. doesnt know why Im having so much "knee area" pain and upper thigh pain. I will tell anyone who has their knee, leg fused, that the "setting" of the rod that runs from your upper thigh area to you ankle, which is inside your bones, is very painful. I was not told it feels like someone is hitting you with a sledge hammer. It actually feels like a bone has broke. VERY painful. So, now Im still gimping around, still in pain, and wondering if things will ever get better.

Hello. I am sorta in the same situation as you. I had my knee fused at the age of 4. I am now 26. I have a dr. That is able to do a knee replacement surgery but I am still trying to do some research. My legs are uneven so I wear a heal insert in my shoe to help out. I do suffer from back pain as well. Sitting for long periods of time are painful as my left leg just kinda hangs from the chair.
Re: Knee fusion
Feb 13, 2012
Ya, the whole thing sucks. If I sit for long periods of time, my leg falls alseep on me. Im so frustrated with the whole thing. Im thinking of going to NYC to The Hospital of Special Surgeries to see if this can be reversed or if I have any other options. My "good" knee is getting so bad, Im afraid I will be blowing it out soon. I can hardly get up now. The built up shoe does work, but when I take it off at night, it throws me so off balance having nothing there. My back is getting to be a sore subject too. I have started taking Nuycenta again just at bedtime. It does help a little with the pain, but as soon as I get comfortable, my hip starts to hurt. It gets old so fast. I have had mine done for 5 months, so I cant even imagine the frustration you must be going through. Some days I wonder why I get out of bed! Thanks for replying back. At least I know Im not alone out there. Take care;)

hi meema63,
How has the pain been for you? Im in terrible pain in my upper thigh area. My dr. is as frustrated as me, because the other ones he has done, the ppl have been pain free. I guess I am the one in a million who will suffer with this. Amputation is still in my mind, thinking that it would be better to have a fake leg because of (use to be) being very active. There are so many limits with this that I guess I wasnt prepared for. I hope you are fairing better than I am. Thanks

Hi mom555,
The pain is horrible...I fight it daily, morning, noon and night...I do have pain meds, but I hate the way they make me feel...Sleep is limited because it's so hard to get comfortable for any length of time...Amputation is a possibility...My surgeon tells me that everything is healing perfectly, but also that I have several more months of healing...UGH...I wouldn't mind so much IF the pain was not there....My PCP thinks I might have nerve damage because of ALL the "procedures" that I've had on this knee in such a short time...I see my surgeon again in June and will make a decision then, I guess...Thanks for replying...comforting to know that I'm NOT alone, but also so sorry you're going through the same..

Re: Knee fusion

Im glad to know Im not crazy after all this. I struggle with the pain 24 hrs a day. Im thinking of amputation too, but its been only 6 months of healing, so Im still not sure yet. I need to let my body heal at this point. Im seeing a chiropractor now, and my lower back does seem better. Is your fused leg shorter than your good one. Im 2 inches shorter, and its awful to walk anywhere. Im still using a walker and my dr. seems to think I should be using a cane by now. I have no balance, so Im sticking to the walker. Where did you have your leg fused? Did they say you would be pain free too? I dont like taking the pain pills either, although I dont see where they help anyways. I know how you feel with the sleeping part. Im always tired because I cant get comfortable either. Toss and turn all night. My poor husband is frustrated too, but has been a saint through all of this. My mood is not very cheery anymore. My whole family has paid for this. Im hoping someday, things will get better, although I cant say that with a smile. Ive talked to some ppl with amputations, and said they cant wear the prostetics because the pain is unbearable from the nerve endings pressing on the fake leg. Im so torn at this point. I just keep taking one day at a time and try not to over do. Keep me updated on your progress. Thanks for chatting!
Re: Knee fusion

I forgot to mention the back pain and the hip pain..can it get any worse???....i had my knee fused at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston...The rod is from my hip to just above my ankle...My leg is shorter, but i have ortho shoes with a wedge and they are a blessing, makes the balance part of it much easier..I,too, am still using a walker, but I'd like to move on to a cane soon, but my balance is so off I don't dare to yet....My surgeon did say the pain SHOULD go away after I heal, but nothing is guaranteed....I am also blessed with a very loving and caring husband as well as my family...I will be the first to admit that I am NOT always very nice to be around.....and that's because of the pain, which as you know, controls me and my moods.....My favorite saying is " it is what it is" so i guess I just have to try to take it one day at a time..I tell myself it could be so much worse...thankfully, I am not dealing with a deadly disease or anything like that, so I do count my blessings...but, enough is enough already...I hurt my knee in 2006 and have fought pain ever since....One day at a time is a good way to look at it....what more can we do???...I do thank the Lord for my family because they keep my spirits up...Keep in touch...I enjoy chatting too..

they told me that i will be shorter on my right side, they told me i wont be able to bend my leg or walk up stairs... not to much about the pain.. i learned most of it on the web. they also told me that i will have more stability an my knee wont be giving out on a wim. an i wont have to worry about my knee letting go any more or falling 10 times a day cause of my knee....
Re: Knee fusion
Mar 25, 2012
Im almost 2 inches shorter on my right side. I have severe pain all the time and they told me that I wouldnt have any pain when it was done. So untrue. I have talked to another person on here and she said the same thing. I have had mine done for 6 months now. It hasnt gotten any better. You can do stairs, but u have to be careful. Its a pain because no matter where u sit, your leg is always sticking out in front of you in the air. You cant imagine the things you take for granted now. Sitting on a chair, toilet, getting in the shower, its all getting use to agian. I use a shower chair now all the time, and I have to drive with my right leg in the passerger seat and use hand controls. I use a walker full time because of the pain and leg being shorter. I dont have great balance anymore. Sleeping is another story. Its so uncomfrotable and my hip is killing me, not to mention the back. I am seeing a chiropractor now for all the pain. I take pain pills, but they dont help at all. It is very complicated to try and wrap your head around it. Your whole life will change. I am a very active person, and now the limitations have really gotten to me. I use a electric scooter outside, because of the balance issue, and I cant walk very far. It really sucks. But, dont let me infulance you. You have to do what is right for you. Just be prepared for a big life changing experience. Im still thinking of having mine amputated. I have a built up shoe, which does help a little, but my insurance wont pay for any of it. It costs me 80.00 for one inch to be added on, and I need a inch and a half. I dont forsee ever working again, because of the issue of sitting for long peroids of time. And sitting is a issue, because your leg has to always be supported and mine falls asleep alot.
Well, that is some of my story. I have a replaced left knee, and that takes the brunt of the getting up and down. It is now killing me. Just another perk! LOL
I hope you have better luck than me. Keep me posted on your progress. Take care! By the way, how old are you and where are you having it done?

well i have a failed knee replacement.... my knee gives out all the time i have no stiablity on my right leg. i have no knee cap an that is why my knee gives out. i had my knee replaced in 2009. i went to dartmouth an the dr brought my case up with his surgical team.. an the only thing that a better out come was gettin my knee fused... i have hurt other parts because i never know when my knee will give out. my tendon that is supposed to run over the knee cap is permently dislocated to the outside of my leg
Re: Knee fusion
Mar 25, 2012
Hi, I dont understand why they cant put in a new knee cap, and see what happens. Have you gone for a second opinion? Why are they not putting a new knee in for you. That doesnt seem right.....just my opinion.
Re: Knee fusion
Mar 25, 2012
they cant put one in beacuse i am rejecting them... an they cant put a new knee cap in because of my tendon being streched out an they cant fix it..... this is my 3rd opion on my right knee.... i had 6 surgerys before they said to fuse the knee... been going through this since 2004.
Re: Knee fusion

Hi Julie and welcome,
I am the other person that mom555 mentioned that has a knee fused as well...I totally agree with mom555...I am in pain 24/7 and have been told that my leg is still healing....Like mom555 said, having a fused knee changes just about every aspect of your living...I would also suggest getting a second opinion, especially since you're so young(I'm 66)....My story is almost a carbon copy of mom555's, but if there is anything else you would like to know or ask, please feel free to do so....It is comforting to know that we are not alone and that there are other people out there that know EXACTLY how we feel...Best of luck to you..

i have had so many surgerys to fix this leg... an everything they have done isnt making it better i have seen 4 doctors an some wont even touch me because of the damges i have to this leg... i fall all the time i cant enjoy my girls an i cant even drive. been doing this since 04....
Re: Knee fusion
Mar 26, 2012
Hi Julie,
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about your problem...Believe me, I feel your pain...It sounds to me that a fusion might be your only option, that is, other than an amputation....I am also at the point of considering an amputation because the pain and discomfort is SO bad, but my surgeon wants me to wait because he says my leg is still healing....I use to be a very active person...Now, I must use a walker inside the house and a scooter if I want to get outside to enjoy some fresh air....I have to sit and elevate the leg quite often to relieve some of the pain..It really stinks, but I had NO other choice....Hopefully, if you do decide to have a fusion, yours will be successful...i do believe that momm555 and myself are in the minority, most people are thankful that they fused the knee/leg and have a almost "normal" life.....best of luck and please feel free to ask questions and do keep us updated......thinking of you....

Hi Julie, I saw that you cannot drive anymore. I have to use hand controls, which scared me to death to think about, but they are really handy and affordable. I use AllegroMedical and the product is AZ-portable hand controls. They attach to the gas and brake pedals. I ride with my right foot in the passanger seat. It has given me my freedom back, since I am not one to sit around. It takes 1 practice, and you will have it down pat. I am not one to sit around too much as I start getting depressed and miserable. It has really helped me with being part of the "world" again. You can go online and find it. My insurance didnt pay for it, but they are not too expensive. It was a write off at tax time also. Dont know if this helps, but maybe a little light at the end of a dark tunnel for you. Keep us posted with your progress. Take care Carla

yes this dose since i havent been able to drive since 2010 when the doctors said that the tkr didnt work... my girls has to learn that mommy cant do much or go anywhere... what really hurt was the fact i couldnt go an see my girls play any sports.... that was the hardest part for me an depressing as well....
Re: Knee fusion
Mar 27, 2012
You will only have bandages on it for the incision. You dont have to ever wear a brace or anything again. It will be completely straight forever.

You will be very sore for awhile, and hopefully it will be better for you. The rod setting is very painful. I thought I had broke my bone. It sets into your bone, I guess by you putting weight on it. It happened 3 times to me in the lower leg and 2 times in the upper thigh area. I dont know if meema had the same experience with that, but they dont tell you how it feels, so heads up on that one. Mine has been fused since Sept 16, so the bone had competely fused together. Hope this helps some. Boy, I sure wish I had someone to talk to before I had this done!! Take care and keep us updated
Re: Knee fusion
Apr 12, 2012
This is what happened to me I had a knee fusion in 98 yes it did take away the pain but live does change going down stairs is the worse in and out of the car having a bath getting up from the floor and the big one sleeping since I had my knee fusion I have never had a full night sleep in 15 years .

When I was younger I could cope with it but now the fusion as caused arthritis of the spine and the only way to help with this is to have the fusion taken down which is going to be done this year.
Over the years I have thought about amputation of the leg due to the problems with pain and you do know when itís going to rain or snow.
If I know back then what I know now I would not have had the fusion done

Hi Firefox60,
I am just curious, but how long before your pain went away???...I had my fusion done this past October and have NOT had a day withOUT pain...I know Mom555 also is experiencing pain and hers was done before mine.....I was so hoping to be pain-free, but that has not happened yet....I,too, am considering an amputation IF the pain doesn't go away...Enough is already TOO much!!...I am able to walk SHORT distances with a cane and can only stand but a few minutes before my leg, my hip and my back SCREAM at me....Like you said, a full's night sleep, huh, what's that???....I only wish I knew then what i do know now....

Hi mom555,
Pain, pain go away....ugh...still no relief and I'm guessing you're feeling the same...I do have an appointment with my surgeon next month and he wants to take more xrays etc....My PCP feels that some of my pain might be "nerve related" due to so many procedures done on this leg....

The pain of the knee went away straight in 8 weeks but then the back pain came in 2010 and I still have that pain until they take the fusion down. Dont think about amputation they say that the pain will still be there and will never go away what country are you in and how many Dr's have you seen

welcome and hello Mike,
I would be more than happy to answer whatever questions you might have...My question to you is : why are you having your knee fused?....I had mine fused in October and yes, it is life changing...It is difficult to sit, to stand any length of time, to go up and down stairs, just to name a few....I have not tried driving yet, but I know another member Mom555 is driving using hand controls...I had hoped to be pain-free by now, but that hasn't happened yet....and try to get a good nights sleep, huh....When are you having your surgery?....Talk to you soon,

Re: Knee fusion
May 27, 2012
I too am having a problem with my right leg. In March of 2011 I had a knee replacement which was wonderful for 5 days. On the fifth day my patellar
tendon tore, and I was unable to move either foot. This left me confined to a wheel chair only able to transfer to bed, car toilet.

The doctor tried to fix it but it didn't hold and also left me with an infection. Since then we have been to HSS in New York three different times to see three different doctors trying to get help. We finally found a doctor at Duke in North Carolina who was willing to help but said we had to wait at least 6 months before he could do anything. Finally in February of this year he removed the TKR and cleaned outh the wound and put in a spacer with meds. I was on IV's for 7 weeks and was told the infection had cleared up. It's now 8 weeks later and my latest blood test showed higher numbers showing the infection had returned.I don't know what he will do next (Ihave to have another blood test on June 6th). After the infection is cleared up he told me I had three choices, fusion, amputation, or staying this way in a wheel chair wearing a knee imobilizer for the rest of my life. I am 71 years old and after reading all of your blogs I think I will stay in the wheel chair unable to walk.
I would welcome any input from you as to my decision.
How is it going as they want to do my husbands knee fusion and he wants a knee replacement had an infection been suffering for 3 years
Just had another blood test and it looks good. I was so worried about it. I don't know how to tell you whats best for your husband. For me I am choosing to stay in a wheelchair unable to walk because of my age. Also I have read so many articles about fusion and I know it's not for me. If your husband has an infection it has to be cleared up before anything. Is he seeing an infectious disease doctor. After they removed my knee replacement in February they cleaned out the wound and put in spacers then I was on IV's twice a day for 7 weeks. They tell me they can't put a new knee and tendon because the tendon is from a foreign body and can easily get infected. Especially since I have already had an infection.
Where do you live and has he seen specialists not just his orthopedic doctor?
Re: Knee fusion
Jun 25, 2012
Hi mom555,
just wanted to give you an update on my "condition".....My PCP sent me for a cat scan on my back and it turns out that I have a few bulging discs...I then went to the pain clinic at my local hospital and they will give me some injections to relieve that pain, but I have to wait 3 weeks because i was hospitilized when my kidneys shutdown(few weeks ago) and the DR wants time for my kidneys to heal...The Dr at the pain clinic feels that my constant knee pain is due to nerve damage and has started me on Gabapentin(nerve med)...She feels that this med will ease my pain, but if it doesn't there are several other "nerve meds" that she has had success with....I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel....finally

Thank you for your kind words....I have to tell you what just happened to me....I was walking in my kitchen (with my ortho shoes) and my ankle on my "bad" leg gave out, twisted right under and down I went.....so, off to the ER....xrays showed a small fracture of the ankle, a bone chip and bad sprain...so air cast for 2 weeks....weight bearing as possible..so I'm on crutches, using my walker and my scooter for out doors.....no swimming until I'm done with the cast....can't walk on it yet because of the pain/swelling etc.....and so it goes......It is what it is and I'm dealing with all of it the best I can....How about yourself???

Hello, I read about the worries of some people regarding driving after knee fusion. I had my right knee fused straight a few years back and I drive a car with automatic transmission and the gas pedal was put to the left side so I can use it with the left foot, since my right leg is fused straight. Noone needs hand controls to drive a car after knee fusion. You just need a car with automatic transmission and the gas pedal on the correct side.
