Hi Joe T,

Glad your TKR went well last month. I had my second TKR 4 months ago tomorrow (Monday) on 3/23, and within a month, I was basically all healed. My first TKR on my right knee (4/5/11) took a lot longer to rehab because I also had to have the left knee scoped during the same surgery so I literally didn't have a stable leg to stand on last year!

What you should actually be doing to reduce pain and swelling of the knee at night is to sleep on your back with the surgery knee fully extended and a pillow or rolled up towel under the ANKLE, not the knee! You don't want the knee to be in the bent position while you sleep because it will "lock up" on you and heal that way! If it does, the surgeon would have to go in and straighten the prosthetic knee, and I'm SURE you don't want to have that happen! Ideally, most ortho surgeons will tell their patients to sleep this way for the first six weeks post TKR. It helps the healing process and ensures proper extension and range of motion recovery of the prosthetic knee. Try this and let me know how you feel after a few nights of this. I think you will find vast improvement within a week of doing this.

Best regards,
