TKR 7 years later
May 30, 2014
I don't have anybody to really talk to, so I am writhing in this forum for maybe some answers.

I had my TKR when I was 36, now I am 43 and have had worked very hard in those 7 years returning to work. I have a very physical demanding job and I know that my job has made my knee worse. I am about a 100 lbs over weight because I just cannot do much anymore. I mean I can still get around OK but the weight it pilling on. My diet is bad and maybe because I am depressed. I feel lazy and not wanting to do much. My Job requires many hours on your feet, lifting squatting, kneeling lifting, pushing and non stop walking. Depending on the season it can be from 10 to 14 hours a day. I also was told not to kneel, but that is part of my job and no way around it. I tried knee pads but they slip and fall off as I am on the move all day and do not have time to adjust them.

So with that little bit of data, I left work back in March because I had enough with the pain and swelling. I began seeing my doctor again and he put me out of work for two months. In the meantime we discussed surgery and what we can do to fix this. He feels that the knee is OK, I beg to differ. Another DR of his felt the knee was a bit loose so we then began to talk replacing the spacer in the knee and thicken it up so I can get stability. So we scheduled surgery. Surgery day came and I had to reschedule due to an illness, so it is postponed a month. However in the meantime I am out of work, but thinking now, I feel better. I am not having allot of the problems I had when I was working and feel if I lost the weight and got a new job I might be ok. I still have stability issues and still have streaking pain, but I am thinking what and how much will I gain by this surgery and is it worth it? If I do have this horrible surgery again and go back to this job, I am going to be in the same boat again. Also to add my job will be harder come the fall as jobs are being cut and will be added on to me. I would be looking at double the work load.

So with that, my problem is I have a good job and make good money with lots of benefits. I am not educated and have no qualifications. I also live in a place that has very little jobs. Most are government jobs and construciton along with part time stuff as it is a seasonal resort. I was actually lucky to have a good paying job and feel blessed to have the job. I just don't know what to do. I am running out of time with insurance benefits, but I have over a year to get back to my position. I am also not going to be able to have a DR keep me out as my surgeon will not keep me out any more. I had to fight to get another month off and when that month is up and if I don't have the surgery I am going to have to go back and suffer again.

I don't know if anyone has any advise for me. I don't know what to do. I am 43 hurt and cannot work. I have read about SSI benefits but I don't want to do that. I would still like to work, but what am I going to do and who is going to hire me? I don't want to be broke as I have a family to care for. I would love to go back to school for a trade but how with a home and family. My wife does well, but I don't want her to carry the weight. I have also read new stats that show people go back to heavy labor jobs after TKR and yeah that is true, but I want to see what those people say in 5 or 10 years as I am saying that heavy labor has ruined my knee. If anybody knows or has an opinion what I should do I would love to hear it. I just hate to have this surgery now knowing that heavy labor is the problem. I will also note I settled a small workman's comp years ago and was told it was closed and nothing I can do with that now.

Please if anyone has been here or can help me or send me a sign, please do. All opinions are welcomed. Thank you. Also sorry for any typos here, my computer loves to fix things on its own.
