Re: Thrush???
Feb 17, 2001
Thrush has been around forever. It's an overgrowth of a yeast called Candida Albicans that lives in probably every mammalian mouth on the planet. It's normally kept in check by the mixed population of all the other bugs that live in everyones mouth.

Use of antibiotics or mouth rinses, amongst other things, can cause thrush, by killing bacteria which allows Candida Albicans to expand it's territory to the extent that is becomes a visible plaque. I don't know what it looks like or whether it scrapes off. I'm a nurse but I don't like looking into peoples mouths. Any doctor should be able to recognize it in a second.

I don't know that it has any association at all with AIDS, except to say that people who are sick, and that includes people with AIDS, or are on antibiotics, anti virals, immunosuppressants or chemo for cancer are more likely to have thrush.
