Not eating!?!?!
Sep 3, 2007
OK, so this sounds odd but it's true and I'm dumbfounded as to what could be going on! Sorry if this is a long post...First, I want to say that my daughter is a very healthly eater and has gradually been put on a consistent schedule of 6 oz. every 4 hours and she sleeps through the night 7-8 hours no problem.

So, I started her on rice about 2 weeks ago (per the doctor's advice to start cereals). She is 4 1/2 months old. She ate it with limited issues (being that it was the first time for any food)!:D Then, I started the barley. Within hours, and all the next day before and after the 2nd feeding of the barley she was extrememly moody, very cranky, seemingly overtired and slept more than usual. The next day, I thought that maybe she had an aversion or some kind of allergy to the barley (even though there was no rash or skin discoloration). Just to see if the extreme crankiness would subside w/o the barley, I stopped giving it to her. And ever since that day, (this was last Wednesday), she has been less cranky but it seems that all of a sudden, she doesn't want her bottles. She has started eating less and less and getting really fussy ONLY when I was feeding her and then afterward from gas. It started out with 4 oz. for most of her bottles, then on Friday, my MIL decided to give her oatmeal for the first time to see if she'd take it and she did but she only took 3 oz. from her bottle at 3 of her feedings!!

She turns and shakes her head, purses her lips, and pushes the bottle away!! :o NO matter what I do, she doesn't seem to want to eat. She did better through this weekend (I continued giving her oatmeal once a day) but still not so great...only taking 4 or 5 oz. But this morning, I am most alarmed by this behavior!! After 6 1/2 hours of sleep, she woke up and only ate 1 1/2 oz. and clearly did not want anymore, then proceeded to play happily for the next 2 hours and is now down for a nap!!!

I'm thinking she MUST be pretty sick, but she is not feverish or cranky or any symptoms like that. She has been pretty gasy though and in discomfort after the maybe it's a sudden allergy to the formula??? She's been on the same one for at least 2 months now (I breastfed in the beginning) w/o problems. Or, is this just an adjustment to the new addition to cereal? I've thought of calling my doctor but thought it may just be a phase and now, of course, it's a holiday and I'm most worried!! What do you think is going on here???
it's funny you said that, koukla, because the opinion changes all the time about when to start food on an infant! with my first, it was 4 months, with my niece who was born exactly a year later, it was 6 months, then with my daughter, born exactly a year after that, it was back to 4 months, then seven months later my nephew was born and it was 6 months again, then five months after that, my third nephew was born (which was exactly one year after my 2nd daughter was born), and we were back to 4 months..... truth is, i really have to wonder if those "experts" actually KNOW anything about it....:)

my daughters are almost exactly 2 years apart (like they're one year 11 months and 3 weeks apart... or something like that!). my first, at 4 months was scarfing down everything we gave her like it might be her last meal. she was eating two jars a day by five months, and still drank her regular 8 ounce bottles! with my first, i decided to go ahead and start her on jar foods when i started cereal because cereal is just gross by itself and she really didn't love it.

my second, on the other hand, was barely up to drinking 5 ounces at a time, and if i gave her cereal, we were lucky if she drank 3 ounces in the rest of her bottles that day! i figured out through trial and error, that if i gave her cereal and fruit one day, not to expect her to drink much for the rest of the day, and she absolutely wouldn't eat cereal and fruit the next day. she didn't work her way up to two jars a day until she was 7 or 8 months old (and then it was two size 1 jars, or one size 2 jar).

anyway, all babies are different. yours might be like my younger daughter and just not have a very big tummy. OR she might have had trouble digesting the barley. that's one i never tried with my two.... we stuck with rice and oatmeal and occasionally mixed grain when they were older. my older daughter had no problems with any of them. my younger daughter actually would take even less formula (like 2 or maybe 2 1/2 ounces) whenever i gave her oatmeal, so with her we mostly stuck with rice until she got older.

sooooo...... being a mommy is all about trial and error, because no matter how many books you read, or how much advice you are given by long winded rambling posts such as this one ;) , at the end of the day, you are the mommy and you know your baby and what she needs.... follow her cues, and you'll figure it out together. :)
