Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Board Index

My baby is 3 months old and we just started rice cereal in her formula. She saw a GI specialist for her issues (I think similiar to your babies issue) and she recommended it for us. She said you typically put 1 tablespoon per ounce of formula; however, she said that is quite a bit and very thick. So, we are only putting 1 teaspoon (not tablespoon) in for every 2 ounces right now. We expanded the hole in the nipple and she takes it just fine. She drinks the same amount as well. If she were to eat a little less, it's fine because the rice cereal has calories as well and she is still gaining weight as she should. She has also started to sleep through the night (for 3 nights now)! So, we are having great luck with it; however, we were advised to do this by the specialist who knew the issues our baby was having. Also, it did not constipate her at all. She told us that if it did to use oatmeal cereal for babies instead of rice.
i started my first on rice cereal at around 2 months for the same reason, but it really didn't help her not spit up.... she did start sleeping longer though! both my siblings used rice cereal in their babies' bottles starting around 1 1/2 - 2 months and it actually did help with their babies' spitting up issues. if you are looking for a more natural alternative, rice cereal would be one to consider. you can start with small amounts at first and see how she does.

i did have my first on zantac too though. it didn't keep her from spitting up either, but i believe it protected her from all the acid that comes with spitting up, because she was the happiest baby you ever met! and that child spit up pretty much every single thing she ate! YUCK!

anyway, rice could help her to not spit up so much, but if it doesn't, or if you choose not to try it, the zantac will coat and protect her little system so that she doesn't get sore from all the spitting up.
