I'm 28, DH is 25. All my tests are normal, DH has count of only 200,000. So we are doing first IVF w/ICSI in January. The clinic I'm at says we should have a great chance, but I worry that it won't happen. We are supposed to move to Canada from the US in the spring, so we really will only have two cycles to try. Does it usually take more then one cycle?

For those who've conceived using ICSI, how many times did it take? What are your "stories"? How many eggs did they take? Did your dh have issues w/ his count? DH's numbers were low, motility was a bit low, but morph was excellent.

We are doing a repeat SA on the 14th.

We have no known problem. The only reason we go this route is because my DH had a vasectomy. Using his frozen sperm, we did IVF/ICSI last month, 21 eggs retrieved, 15 fertilized, two excellent blastocysts transfered, 13 embies frozen. Last week I got the bad news, Ivf did not work for me this time. I guess I'll do FET whenever we have the money again. But I hope it works for you. Good Luck.
For us, with unexplained IF, it took 2 tries at IVF w/ICSI. the first time we transferred 2 blasts but it did not work. the second time we transferred 2 blasts and 1 morulla and it worked. at the time of the IVF cycles I was 33 and DH was 36. We are now expecting twins in May. There was never any explanation for why the first cycle didn't work. we pretty much did the same protocol the second time and it worked. it's crazy. I only have one embryo frozen - that's all that made it to blast for freezing. I did 5 day transfers both times. My first transfer was in May with BFN in June, the second transfer was in August with BFP in Spetember. So I had to wait 2 cycles in-between IVF's to give my body time to rest and quiet the ovaries and review my previous cycle. If (and hopefully you won't need to) you need to do 2 cycles, you should be able to do them before you move if you move in late spring. I hope it only takes you one try to get your miracle.
Most statistics say that there is roughly a 50% success rate with IVF.
We did our 1st IVF in July. We used DH frozen sperm samples and did IVF with ICSI. My doc wanted to do a 5 day blast transfer. I only had 8 fertilize, and by day 5, none of ours were blastocysts. They transferred 3 morulla on Day 5....BFN. Our RE then decided our best next move would be a 3Day transfer the next time.
2nd IVF was in September. My med dosage was increased a little and resulted in 17 fertilized embryos at the time of retrieval. We transferred 4 8-celled embies on Day 3 and.....BFP! We have only one frozen blastocyst left over after 2 cycles. My doc said that only about 30% of the time you'll end up with "leftover" embies if you're lucky, then you could try a FET!
I was pregnant with just the one baby (no multis in our case), but then miscarried at 10 weeks. We're not sure what we'll be doing in January...either another IVF or maybe try the FET with just the one embie. I dunno! But i'm not giving up yet.
I hear many stories on success with IVF the very first try. But, like in our case, the first try was more of a "practice" cycle. A very, very expensive practice cycle. But the docs learned from their mistakes and tried new things the second time and it worked!!
My RE already told me that for our 3rd IVF she will not change the protocol at all because it did work the 2nd time.
2 cycles may be all that you need!
Hi, it all depends on luck some docs even call it the lottery :) I have endometriosis, my DH has no problems, we did IVF/ICSI and assisted hatching
once in August, retrieved 13 eggs, 8 mature, 7 fertlized, 4 froze and we put back 1-8Cell and 2-6cell on day 3--I got a BFN. The 2nd time, we had 29 eggs, 17 mature, 5 fertilized and we put all 5 back in on day 3, 1-8 cell, 2-6 cells, and 2-5 cells.--I am now pregnant with Twins due in June. So you really never know, I thought for sure with our low fertilization rate that this cycle didn't work and we were very pleasantly suprised :) :angel:AimeeM
I had heard that it takes on average three tries, but as everyone has said, you never know. We did ICSI/IVF b/c of DH's sperm (low count and no motility). No problems with me. We did our first cycle this fall, retrieved 16 eggs, 13 mature, only 4 fertilized, but 3 were "beautiful" on day 5. We transfered two 5-day blasts and I am over 1o weeks pregnant with one.

Good luck!
Marie
