Thanks for your encouragement Zibah...and good luck to you in getting pregnant as a single woman...believe me it is hard work, but worth every minute of it. I am now 5 weeks pregnant and hope that I can keep this pregnancy going until at least 30 weeks....I have a history of miscarriage and premature deliveries. Right now I have 2 healthy boys 14 years old (from marriage #2) and 3 year old from donor sperm. This pregnancy is from the same donor.

The first time I did HSG (15 years ago) it was so painful that I nearly stood up in the stirrups. The doctor (mal) told me that it would feel like mild cramps. Since I have never had cramps before and he obviously never had them either, suffice to say that I no longer trusted his judgement. There was just a slight blockage and that was cleared our by the HSG. I got pregnant the following month but lost the pregnancy to miscarriage at 13 weeks.

Let's skip ahead to the present and my use of donor sperm...I researched sperm banks and decided to use Xytex in Augusta GA because their donors can chose to have current photograph as part of the information available. I liked the idea of being able to see what genes I am mixing with mine. Currently Xytex does not have the policy of having the child meet the donor at age 18 (as some sperm banks promise) but that was not my biggest concern. I also think that in the future the laws will change regarding sperm donation and make it easier for the child to learn who there donor is once they come of age.

Glucophage (metformin) is a diabetes medicine that regulates the bodies production of insulin. They have determined that many times polycystic ovaries (PCOS) is caused by insulin resistance. It immediately helped me (not just allowing me to ovulate). I lost weight, excess hair on my face stopped growing and my periods came like clockwork. The initial side effects are awful (gas, diarrhea, nausea, etc), however, for me they went away in 3 weeks. I started taking this medicine in 1997 (1500 mgs a day). Now I take 1 pill a day (500 mg) for maintenance and have no side effects.

When I first decided that I was going to use a sperm donor, I thought that I would go to one of the women's clinics that advertise in the phone book. What I found is that many of those also perform abortions (which I have no problem with for those that need it), but at the time they were being picketed on a daily basis. Other places catered to lesbians trying to conceive and I didn't feel comfortable since I'm not a lesbian (not that there's anything wrong with that). I finally decided to call my doctor and she agreed to do the insemination.

I tried IUI between 6-8 times with my gyn using just the clomid, temperature monitoring, and ovulation prediction kits. We purchased the prewashed sperm but I was never able to conceive.

After 1 year of unsuccessfully trying to conceive, my insurance company would then pay for reproductive services, so I started going to Southeastern Fertility Clinic here in Atlanta. My RE was against my using the clomid again, because of the number of times I had used it, but since my insurance at the time didn't pay for injectables she gave me clomid and put me on the glucophage. This time we purchased the unwashed sperm (SFI performed the wash) and it worked immediately. I lost the baby at 23-24 weeks.

I tried again the following year (begged for the Clomid which she allowed one more time) and with the Glucophage got pregnancy immediately. Rough pregnancy..incompetent cervix, 2 cervical cerclage.. 7 weeks hospital bed rest and 14 weeks bed rest at home but I delivered a beautiful baby boy, now 3.

One vial left of this donor, so I decided to give it one final try (I'm 41 now). This time the doctor said no way on the Clomid so I had to use the injectibles. At least my insurance covers it now, otherwise given that I was on between 2 - 4 vials a day for 10 day it would have set me back about $4,500 dollars.

As I said, it worked and I am now 5 weeks pregnant. Hopefully I can keep the pregnancy going at least past the 28 weeks. My 14 year old was born at 33 weeks. I already know that I will need to get another cerclage in a few weeks.

Good luck and lot of baby dust to everyone.
