I had my first HSG 2 weeks ago. I really wouldn't say that it is painful just a little uncomfortable at times. You'll feel some cramping when the dye is inserted. My Dr. told me to take 800mg of Motrin 1 hour before test time. Not sure if that's what helped or not but ask them if you should take anything before to help. Try to stay calm and remember to breath. That was the nurse's advice to me and I think that helped. The great thing is you can watch the monitor as they do the test and get instant results. That was the best part for me...even though I have 1 blocked tube :( At least I know now and can work on possibly getting it fixed.
As far as IUI, sorry I really can't help you. I'm not at that stage yet and don't know much about how that works.
