First, take a deep breath and try not to panic! My doctor did something similar out of concern for making sure everything would be convered by my insurance. If you're lucky enough to have insurance that covers fertility issues, it is usually for a limited amount (limited number of procedures or limited dollar amount). My regular ob/gyn wanted me to be seen by a specialist so that I didn't "waste" any of my insurance allotment by being treated by someone who was not a specialist.

Further testing will really help pinpoint your specific fertility issues. This will help guide treatment, whether that ends up being clomid, IUI, IVF, or something else. Depending on the specific fertility issues, IUI can be done with or without meds, although meds may be recommended to help with follcile growth, to stimulate ovulation, etc. Typically, the sperm count needs to be above a certain number for IUI to be considered a viable option (sorry, but I forget what that number is, maybe 2million???). IVF is less frequently covered by insurance, typically involves a higher level of meds, as well as minor surgery for the egg retrieval. Many people will opt for IVF after several unsucceeful IUIs. However, depending on the fertility issues, some will move straight to IVF.

Based on my personal circumstances, my doctor said I have a higher chance of multiples with IUI, but a much higher chance of getting pregnant with IVF. I have done 5 IUIs (2 with Clomid and 3 with injectables). I did get pregnant this last time, but had a very early miscarriage. Right now, I'm taking a break from fertility treatments and deciding whether to continue with more IUIs or move on to IVF.

Good luck to you! I hope it works out.
