Questioning Lasik
Dec 17, 2006
In 2005 I had recurrent conjunctivitis due to my ill fitting contacts, and said in 2006 I'd have Lasik done. It's almost 2007 and I am just now starting to look into it. I went to the "premier" Lasik surgeon in my area, and was impressed with the facility, but not the cost or staff.
$4700, free touch up with in one year, and it was like a meat factory. (He uses the Intralase.) I don't know if the fact that they know I'm a nurse made a difference, but they weren't very eager to explain things.
This week I go for a consultation at another office. I've heard some bad things - they re-use their microkeratomes, and a friend did some consulant work with the surgicenter across the street from this place and said he's horrible.
I've been reading the posts from all of you, and now I really don't know if want to do this. I'm 32, my eyes aren't terrible, but how is this going to affect me in my 40's, and later? Everyone I've talked to that has had Lasik or PRK done, says it's the best money they've ever spent. BUT these long term effects scare the heck out of me.
HELP?!?!?!!

My honest opinion is that if you've heard bad things about a particular place, then stay away from it. When choosing who is going to perform your surgery, I would make reputation my number one priority. Does the place that charges $4700 do microkeratome or intralase? If microkeratome, that does sound a little bit high but not completely unreasonable.
As far as not being sure if you want to do it or not, I didn't come to this board until after I had it done, but had I come here first I might have been scared too after reading some threads. However, for me personally I couldn't stand wearing contacts or glasses anymore and I wanted Lasik really, really badly. I just decided one day to make the call and went through with it from there. I was very nervous the month leading up to it but now I am thrilled. I have 20/20 vision almost 7 weeks post lasik, and my eyes are feeling better and better everyday. I don't know how your eyes will be in your 40's as I am only 24 but I have been told that I will need reading glasses at that age, which is fine if I can go 20 years without glasses or contacts!
As far as the long term effects go...there's really no way to know for certain what your outcome will be but if you go to a good surgeon and they find you to be an excellent candidate then statustucally everything should turn out well. My only real issue is dry eyes, which everyone gets to some extent, and this is becoming less and less of an issue everyday and it's really not even that bad now. My suggestion would be to do some research and to figure out if you really want it done, and then choose a reputable surgeon. GOOD LUCK!
