I know you guys haven't posted in awhile but I wanted to thank-you for writing what you did and being so honest.

I have a PRK surgery booked in a couple weeks. Half of me is (was) so excited to not have to wear glasses anymore. I have worn them since 9 yrs old-I'm 28 now. I can't wear contacts ever because they make my eyes bloodshot and sore.
The other half of me is screaming not to do it.

My glasses have always made me incredibly self-conscious and I don't see that ever changing. Pictures of myself .. ugh .. swimming, dressing up, ugh .. the glasses feel like an ugly stain smack dab in the middle of my face.

BUT, would I choose looks over sight? Never! All the things you have said are things I thought about.

My co-worker told me her son and his friends who are all in the army, decided to get it done. She did it with them. She told me it was the worst pain she has ever felt. She said her and her son were literally crying and rolling around on the floor. She does have 20/20 vision - for now. But this surgery isn't old enough to know what will happen years later. The other 2 women who got it about 10 years ago both wear glasses now for reading and one has to go back in again and 'top my eyes up'. And yes, paying for another round.

Like you said, I'm taking my almost $3000 and buying 2 pairs of the coolest glasses I can find. I'm also going to find contacts I can wear no matter how expensive they are. If there is any left over .. I'm treating myself to the spa :)

Engineer and RE - I'm praying for both of you. What a horrendous experience! I wish there was a way to get it out there it isn't as magical and wonderful as they make it out to be. The body always compensates-hopefully over time your eyes will do that.

You just never know.

My late, VERY wise, optometrist used to tell me he hated lasik. He never lived to know about PRK but I'm sure his thoughts would be the same. He says those doctors are playing God-a very dangerous thing to do. Whenever I asked about it he would smile and tell me 'do it only if you want to lose your eyesight when you are my age'.
