Lasik Eye Surgery Message Board

Lasik Eye Surgery Board Index

I am in the situation where I'm going to have a surgery next week and I am still allowed to choose between Lasik and PRK because they are both offered at the same price.

I have low to moderate myopia (-4.75 OD, -4.50 OS) with very small astigmatism. My corneas are 525 microns in both eyes. My eyes are otherwise healthy and I never had dry eye problems. I don't have a history of rubbing my eyes and I don't play contact sports. I'm 30 years old. I was told that I was a good candidate for Lasik and that my BCVA was higher than average.

I've been trying to figure out for my situation which procedure will give me the best results.

The information out there seems to be contradictory... on the one hand, some sources seem to say that PRK offers a higher chance of reaching 20/20, give better contrast sensitivity and less higher order aberrations, require less enhancements and the results are more stable long term. Other sources say that Lasik has more predictable and stable results.

What do you guys think? Is there any consensus as to which procedure to choose?

My initial understanding is that PRK might give more predictable results for nearsightedness up to around -6.00 or -7.00, while higher prescriptions would have more predictable results with Lasik, but I can't really find any consensus on this since different sources appear to give me different results.

Also, I'm worried that since my corneas are somewhat thin, I may not be able to get any enhancements if they become necessary, unless I go through with the PRK.

I'd appreciate any advice.
