Lasik Eye Surgery Message Board

Lasik Eye Surgery Board Index

I had Intralase Blade free Lasik 5 weeks ago today. I was mildly near sighted with astigmatism in both eyes. I don't have what my prescription was written down right now. My eyes were bad enough I couldn't drive without glasses. Also if I was on the beach with my young ones I had trouble telling them apart from the other kids without my glasses. But now I realize I was probably better off with glasses!!!!

So I did my research on choosing a doctor and picked one that was highly recommended. He is not just a LASIK surgeon, but does other kinds of cornea and cataract surgeries.

So ever since the day of the surgery my left eye has been perfect. Great distance vision with great clarity. But my right eye is a different story. It is slightly blurry in the distance, which drives me nuts. On my follow up appointment the day and week after the doctor said my right eye is still slightly myopic. And due to my age, 42, this may benefit me so I won't need reading glasses for a while. Also my right eye has been extremely dry, and stil is. Plus my right eye is my dominant one. Although on all of my follow ups they say I am 20/20.

So for my dry eyes the doctor has put in a puntal plug in the lower lid, I am taking omega 3s, drinking an obscene amount of water, using hot compresses, and using preservative free drops like mad!!! So I have a few questions for all of you that have had LASIK.

1. Did you experience dry eye at the 5 week mark like me, and did it eventually go away? If so were you on Restasis, and did it help? I am going back to see my doctor tomorrow again for dry eye. I have a feeling he is going to put me on Restatis. But I am worried that if I get on it, I will never get off.

2. I believe my right eye still has a slight bit of astigmatism, which is causing the blurriness in the distance. At 5 weeks postop is there still a chance this will work itself out? I know that your final vision could take 3 months to settle out, but how much have people seen it change in the months following LASIK?

3. Could it just be the dry right eye causing the bluriness far away? If it was dry eye wouldn't it cause my close up vision to be blurry too?

At this point even if I am slightly undercorrected in my right eye there is no way I am gonig for an enhancement. I will just deal with it, or wear glasses. Those would be some expensive glasses!!!!!
My eyes are dry from lasik 6 months ago. For some people i guess me and between 20-50% others it can take longer than 6 months for full tear function to kick back in.

One of my eyes sees well the other goes in and out of blurry on fine details like near text and the cable guide. It was worse in the beginning and has improved some over time but still is not consistent. Which apparently one possible cause is dryness.

So yes i would agree that if its dryness it should happen at all distances.

That said i think astigmatism lasik takes longer to get your true final vision than lasik for nearsighted. 5 weeks is early on.

I tried restasis it wasnt helpful but there could be many reasons why. A. I didnt have dryness for the reasons that it corrects - because mine was caused by lasik B.. i read somewhere that it only works on 10% of dry eye - thats a weird stat you could look up and find out if its true or not. My mom's eye doctor told her the stat.

Also even if its not caused by dryness, its best to try to tackle dryness aggressively.
So I went back to see him the other day. But when I went to see him it was the first day that my right eye hasn't felt dry since the day of the surgery! But for the first time my left was dry! Figures. He said the left eye was extremely dry. So he put a plug in that eye and said my right eye looked pretty good. He did not put me on Restasis.

When they tested my sight I could read the 20/20 chart easily with both eyes. I got the 20/15 chart with my right eye, but it was hard. With my left eye I missed one letter on the 20/15 chart. When I asked what my prescription was from the previous testing they did after the surgery he said my right eye is plano, and my left eye is slightly overcorrected at +0.25.

I said is that the reason my right eye feels blurry in the distance? He said that 99% of people wouldn't even notice that difference and I am very sensitive to it. He thinks it is the dryness. He said he is extremely confident that this will go away with time. Not sure how.

But my right eye is still very dry on certain days. I am hoping in time it will go away, but who knows.

One other thing I have noticed is that when I am on the computer for a while and I look up, the distance vision in my right eye is extremely blurry for 10 minutes or so! My left eye never has a problem. I am 42 years old and he told me after the surgery that I may need reading glasses. But why is it only the one eye that does this?

Has anyone else experienced this?
