Lasik Eye Surgery Message Board

Lasik Eye Surgery Board Index

I had my original Lasik procedure on July 31st of this year. I'm 50 years old, so they did monovision. I was accustomed to this because my contact lenses were also monovision (left near, dominant right eye distance). My vision with my contact lenses or glasses was very good.

The good: Immediately after my Lasik, I noticed my near vision was very good - better than it had been with contacts/glasses. I could read the paper, my phone, or a computer screen with ease. I also had little to no discomfort from the procedure. Just some mild dryness the first couple of months that was easily remedied with artificial tears.

The bad: My distance vision was not very good. Driving during the day-time was satisfactory. But night driving was not good. I also struggled seeing clearly beyond 8-10 feet indoors. It was hard to read the guide on the TV screen...hard to read monitors at work when we would display spreadsheets, etc. I also struggled recognizing faces of people if they were more than 10 feet away.

The distance vision may have improved very slightly the first few months, but never to the point where I was satisfied.

The solution: After 3 months, my surgeon determined I needed an enhancement. He said that people with my level of astigmatism need the enhancement about 25% of the time (sorry, I don't know my pre and post op numbers). We did the enhancement yesterday and I just returned from my follow-up. My distance vision is noticeably improved today - I tested at 20/30 +2. I'm able to read road signs better and the guide on the television is clear. There is a drop-off in the quality of my near vision, but seems to be similar to what it was with contacts prior to my surgery. My distance vision seems to be at least as good, if not better than with my contacts.

Conclusion: As of today, I am very pleased. My goal was to at least replicate the quality of my vision with my contacts. It seems we have done it. 4 months later, but we've done it.
Hi IKevin- glad you had a good result- I am trying to decide what to do- did you have a simple procedure- more LASIK to open the flap again?
Hi Henrietta - it was another LASIK procedure, but just on my right eye. No changes were made to my left one. They reopened the flap, which was a quicker procedure than making the original flap. The laser was then on for a total of 8 seconds. They replaced the flap and that was it.

The recovery was easier, too. I did not need to nap (or at least keep my eyes closed for 4 hours). A few hours later, the cloudiness had diminished. By the next morning, my vision was much better and I had no discomfort at all. Almost like I had not even had the procedure.
Hi Kevin- that sounds great, very pleased for you. I still can't decide what to do- I don't mind having something like that if the results will be better , but I am not at all keen ont he contact bandage and longer recovery. I wish I could opt for the lasik only and leave it if they can't do it but I doubt that is an option. I think I am more worried aboput having an enhancement than having the original now my eyes are acceptably ok. I will give the trial contact lens a go when it comes next week. If there is no worthwhile improvement then I have no decision to make.

did you have halos/starbursting after your first surgery? and if so, did your enhancement also include halos/starbursting?
