My brother, who is 56, just had his bi-yearly blood test and this time its not normal. His wbc was, I think he said, 2900. His doctor did the test twice, and its still "off the charts", as his doc puts it. Now he wants him to have a bone marrow(sp) test. He (his doc) is jumping to the possibility of the BIG L. However, my brother feels 100% great. He has tons more energy than me, at 10 years + my age. He's very relaxed and easy going. Nothing bothers him (you know "those" kind of lucky people). One thing that concerns me, he's also gay and in my mind I'm thinking pre-aids or hiv+. But I admit I know nothing about either the BIG L or aids. Maybe aids or hiv+ lowers your wbc, not raises it???
He does take meds for diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Just looking for comments, especially for my aids question.

AIDS lowers the T-Cell count dramatically. Leukemia raises the white blood cell count, but the blood cells are not capable of doing the job. The HIV test is very specific to AIDS, and the ordinary WBC can not be used to diagnose AIDS. The other tests that have to be done with the WBC to define Leukemia as being Leukemia do have to do with the state of the bone marrow. So, don't panic until you know the test results.
Update: Tests showed he has Chronic myelogenous leukemia. Anyone know more of what this type is? His wbc is 33000. I guess norm in 500-1000? His doc said something about a new drug that is very good at treating his type, but more tests need to be done to see if he can use this drug. From what I heard, the drug only works on a certain way Chronic myelogenous leukemia is growing in the body. In other words, the drug doesnt work on all Chronic myelogenous leukemia types. (I got lost at this point)
His doc said this was a slow growing type (Chronic myelogenous leukemia ). When he said slow growing, I was thinking 10-20 years. Then he mentioned 2 - 5 years. That doesnt seem quite slow term to me. The doc is doing more test to see if he can take this new drug. He also said it costs "thousands" a month to get/use. So far my brother has no symptoms. This was only caught from a routeen blood work for high bp and that sort. One thing, when doing a net search on Chronic myelogenous leukemia, you get hits about how benzene exposure causes this type leukemia. And of the things that contain benzene..... you guessed it...smoking!
CML is a "slow" leukemia. I know about 85% of cases roughly have the phili******a chromosome mutation, which is what the drug Gleevac targets. A bone marrow transplant is considered at present the only "cure." 2-5 years is an average, but people have been known to make it 10-20 years without treatment I think...again, I read up on that a long time ago.

CML is chronic compared to acute leukemias. I was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in September 2001 and when my mom asked how long I would have without treatment the doctors gave me 1-2 months. Very different from couple years :(
