Leukemia

I was wondering if leukemia is hereditary. Both my husbands' grandfather (mom and dad sides) died of leukemia. I'm just afraid that my husband get it too.

Yes, leukemia is hereditary; however, just because something is hereditary doesn't mean that other people are going to get it; the odds are just increased. Numerous different cancers are hereditary in my family; I've had cancer three times now and am in the process of finding out if I have it again and I have an older brother and a younger sister and neither of them have any health problems at all, ever.

Don't stress about! It is one of those things that when and IF the time comes that you have to deal with it you deal with it then. Don't worry about it now or you'll stress yourself out. You just have to wait and see what road life leads you down and leave it in the hands of God!:)

There are at least four different kinds of leukemia. I only know a little about CML - Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. CML is not hereditary. The chromosome mutation that causes CML happens after conception due to environmental insult to the bone marrow -via radiation exposure, tobacco smoking, and/or other means. Since the mutation is in the marrow itself, and not in the germ plasm, it can't be passed on to one's children.

Coincident concentration of leukemia in a family is more likely caused by an exposure risk common to all of the family members.
