Not sure where to put this, so I'll throw it in this topic.

My wife, 42 years old, has been having problems with alcohol for the past year or so. Whether she drinks beer, mixed drinks, cider, etc. she gets sick right away even if drinking a 1/2 glass, 1/4 bottle, even a shot glass of booze.

She gets tired right away with gas, Diarrhea, and throwing up. She was never like this in the past. Just recent problems.

She is only a social drinker maybe a drink every other month or so.

Any clues what may be causing this? It's really starting to bother her as we've had to leave parties and dinners because of her getting ill.

She may have developed a sulfite allergy. I'd see an allergist.
When I drink alcohols, especially beer, I do get a lot of flatulence, discomfort and sensation of warmth in rectum, all in first few minutes. If I overdo it (more than 2liters of beer or hard alcohols as vodka etc...), I may get diarrhoea after few hours, but I don't throw up. I feel sick for one or two days (besides having hangover) and my GI is "flared", that being very sensitive for that time. If I consume anything hard and fatty in that time, I may get diarrhoea.

My gastroenterology specialist diagnosed me IBS.
Rapid onset illness from minor alcohol ingestion is often related to a byproduct of alcohol metabolism called "acetaldehyde". Acetaldehyde in small amounts is normally metabolized quiet easily, but many medications, particularly Tylenol/acetaminophen/paracetamol exhaust the bodies detoxification mechanism for acetaldehyde, resulting in illness from even minor alcohol ingestion.

If your wife often needs over the counter pain meds for headaches etc, this may be what is causing her sensitivity to alcohol. Dieting and/or vegetarianism can also cause problems as "cysteine" and "choline" required for metabolism of alcohol/acetaldehyde and Tylenol is normally found in meat and eggs.

Next time you're planning a night out, an omelette for breakfast might help (egg yoke is rich in both cysteine and choline), as well as avoiding over the counter pain meds whenever you might be consuming alcohol. Chicken and beef is also rich in cysteine, and Taurine, NAC (N-acetylcysteine) and/or Lecithin supplements (taken before drinking) may also help.
